It is interesting that Hamas won the elections. Not by a HUGE majority but they did win.
All over the world the religious right wing of whatever religion has been growing stronger. Except of course in Japan and China. Canada, United States, Israel, and now Palestine (if I can really list them currently as a country) all now have right leaning religious advocates in power.
I'm really starting to wonder on many fronts what exactly is up with this. 10 to 20 years ago it seemed the US had a fairly decent seperation of Church and state still. It had an excellent seperation before 1952/53 when the big Religion push began to fight Communism. Now we sit with the influence becoming somewhat pervasive and America no longer holds a moral high ground on the issue of seperation of church and state.
...I ponder.

I think we have adequate separation of church and state in the United States. After all, throughout our history the two have been deeply intertwined. History has always been one of my favorite subjects and even light reading of American history shows this to be true. For example, Christmas carols were not frowned upon when my father went to public school and the logo of the Red Cross was not challenged in my grandfather’s time. Today as before, millions of Americans think about the values their religion holds dear before they vote. As one of the oldest government on the face of the earth, we have a pretty good track record. I also challenge the idea that now that Hamas is elected the United States is turning away from democracy in Palestine. Sure, we aren’t going to support them and provide them with money, but they made the wrong choice. When a politician or party wins an election, moral superiority is not assumed. If that government endorses wiping one of our allies off the map or supports "holy war" against Christians, we should not support the decision, even if it was arrived by democratic means.

The days when Lincoln could lace his speeches with obscure Biblical references and still be understood by everyone are, of course, gone; but these kinds of mistakes wouldn't be made by reporters who are more conversant with even the basics of Christian culture. Or, perhaps, who didn't start out with a bias against the Christians they're writing about.

It would seem that more people than me believe the "separation of church and state" is getting wider.
