The baby blanket I did was also diagonal. It was just a huge oversized washcloth. I think the bias makes it more pliable, for draping around a baby.

With knitting and crocheting I always get a weird corner somehow? Maybe blocking would help? It's really not that obvious in this blanket though, it looks pretty square in the picture. I've ordered from Jimmy Beans before and really liked them. They sent a little emery board and a couple of pieces of candy with my order. Hey if they send candy it must be good!
