river is my all-time favorite callahan-penned album, and "colts" is definitely one of my favorites from it. great writeup!
i always found some abstract imagery in the "all-knowing, all-seeing eye" line, because i feel that it sort of implies that even the omnipresent has got a gambling streak, but then again, that entity probably wouldn't need the money. haha.
watching callahan open solo for joanna newsom and end with "let me see the colts" is one of the highlights of my entire show-going life. pretty life-affirming.
I think River is tied with Red Apple Falls as my favorite Smog album.
Man, I wish I'd seen them on that tour. I wonder if they'll ever tour again. Probably not, since they were once a couple, and who would want to tour with their ex?
