Yeah, I'm 34 going on 35 and danced my way through the halcyon murk of rave culture in the 90s, so this to me is the sound of retro eating itself. It makes me feel old too.
What really made me feel old was posting a Fugazi vid from 1988 on the blog , and realizing my punk/hardcore/whatever show was in 1987. And I still like the music, go to gigs(although the sonic horizons have broadened considerably), the particular rendition of "Waiting Room" on the vid hadn't grown old or tired or cranky and sounded as fresh, urgent and vital as it did.....twenty years ago? And then it hit me...I've been doing this for 20 YEARS?!?!?! Holy crap, indeed. Perhaps Nu-rave hipster kids is the beginning of the generation gap we've been fearing?
I apologize for the poorly speed-typed syntax up there, btw. I'm not senile yet, but I dropped an "is" instead of an "are" and a word or two.
A strange coincidence - At the exact time of reading this I'm listening to At The Drive In. I made a concious choice to listen to them, and it was that which then made me think I should check TWNR. Hmmm.
mark e- nic has actually signed a deal with salvia - an offshoot of xl - and a single is due in jan 08.
christopher - i really do think nu-rave could be the catalyst for a new generation gap. it's been coming. i can't stand the libertines and all those bands they spawned, but it was so derivative and such a throw back to music i used to like it doesn't jar in the same way that most music tagged as nu-rave does with me.
having said that, nic nell is actually referencing sources from scenes that i was into in the past - trance, emo like ...trail of the dead, at the drive in etc - so i'm actually looking forward to hearing what else he gets up to.
