Gay-starved and teen-ignorant, I found twisted hope in the movie's depiction of the wild side. I took for granted its vile view that a killer lurked in who and what I would become 20 years later. Net result: more self-hatred when it mattered most.
OK, I still get the vapors recalling that black bodybuilder, wearing only a cowboy hat, jock, armbands and gloves as he worked over some poor queen in a perp-room (while NYPD officers watched).
Rest assured that I have a good shrink. And that there is no cause for the kind "revaluation" of "Cruising" certain to turn up in a film journal. The flick was a B-grade slasher with A-grade talent, that wanted to be an X-rated COLT loop.

PS: In college, I attended a lecture by director William Friedkin. He showed up eager to discuss his definitive work of the 70's and nearly walked out in a huff as we heckled "Cruising." My little world had begun to grow...
