Sigh. It makes riding on a tailgate in the rain in Atlanta today seem so, so minor.

@WillySF: An incredibly imperfect country, but as I remind myself, I could be in places even worse, say, Iran, Iraq .... pretty much the whole Middle East, Indonesia and Singapore.

Unbelievable So this is the article I'll be showing to my colleague at work tomorrow; the colleague who only last week said to me "But gays don't face any discrimination or violence anymore!".
As another poster said here, this is precisely why we need Pride.

I visited Budapest last year with my partner. We walked the streets, ate in the restaurants and mingled with the everyday people on the streets.
Not one problem or sideway glance.
Granted we were tourists, here and gone, just spending our American dollars but many off the folks we came into contact with were genuinely warm and friendly.
We are leaving again for this beautiful city in August for a one week stay. Don't let the headlines keep you you from visiting this beautiful country/city.

THis may be a dumb question but why why why have the nazis in such close proximity to the parade - why not organize so that they do their thing across town
Or is that just not possible?
How about start making arrest when the first stones are thrown?

i was driving somewhere yesterday and GWB was running his mouth about citizenship in our country during his weekly radio address and he said something like "americans tolerate each other." to me the new standard is acceptance. tolerance isn't good enough starting today.

The truth is that majority of the anti-demonstrators were radical nationalist and not nazis.
They protested because the police formely banned the gay march, but changed the decision and allowed it for them because of political pressure from the liberal-socialist parties.
No gay march = no violence. It is such easy. As someone said above, nobody hunts down gays on ordinary days.

spear: Nuh-uh. If there's no freedom of assembly, there's no democracy. And if violence is the price to maintain that right, I can only hope there are enough people in Hungary willing to pay it. (Easy for me to say, obviously, since I don't live there, but still.)

Horrible, horrible that this happened, but I am confused on something
Neo-nazis, going by the policies of their predecessors, would be socialists. How far left does a place have to be for socialists to be "right-wing extremists"? Even the American extremist mentioned in the first comment, Fred Phelps, is a Democrat.

Hungary has a neo-Nazi problem, but I don't think it's an especially intolerant nation, gay-wise.
I'm heading there in a week for work. It is a very un-scary place, actually. But there are many unresolved issues. Some are upset that they don't still rule Croatia and Slovakia. I bet this issue upsets the neo-Nazis more than gay pride marches.
Yes, this is where all those porn stars come from. Hungary has a thriving, if not especially interesting, gay scene.

i've never been to hungary, so have no first hand experience with what gay life is like, but my husband and i met 2 guys from budapest when they visited montreal last year.
when i asked them what they liked about canada, they replied that they had never felt so free as gay men. from what they said, you can certainly live as a gay person in hungary, but you can't really be very open about it.
does anyone know of organizations that help to fight for gay issues in developing nations? i guess amnesty international would be one...but are there any others that are solely devoted to this?

I matters little whether the protesters label themselves "radical nationalists" or "nazis". What matters is their behavior; and that was boorish, bullying, violent, oppressive and destructive. Call 'em what you will, it is all largely a matter of semantics. The police are not to blame for their hate. Nor are the gay marchers. Gay citizens of Hungary are just the current, convenient, visible target for that particular brand of dysfunction. If there wasn't a gay march (or, in fact, any gay citizens at all) they would simply seek another easily identifiable group to villify and hate. That sort always do. In fact, I know gays are not the only targets of their destruction.

Probably the flags are those associated with the Arrow Cross Party, the Nazi puppets in WWII -- the new version is just red and white stripes.
The opposition was apparently arranged by the "64 Counties" youth group -- named for the number of counties in larger Hungary before 1919 (including parts of Croatia, Slovakia, Romania).
So yes, they have many agenda items beyond gay-bashing. They yelled anti-Semitic slogans as well. Basically, they'll do anything to get attention, and unfortunately they got it.
There's now an online petition to protest the violence: http://www.petitiononline.com/bs...8/

I have to say, having visited Hungary a number of times and lived for a while in neighboring Serbia, I was pretty shocked to read these stories. Until this summer, Budapest had a reputation as the second most gay-friendly city in eastern Europe (after Prague - which is REALLY where all those porn stars come from). Hungary even recently passed legislation granting basic rights to gays in domestic partnerships, which puts it way ahead of most of its neighbors. I think the real problem here is that Hungary is having some economic issues right now, and the uneducated masses are looking for outlets (nationalism, homophobia) for their aggression.
Hope my hottest hook-up ever Gabor is doing ok!

As a Canadian living in Budapest, I had the first hand experience of seeing this past weeks fiasco. I married my partner and relocated to Hungary almost a year ago. We never have encountered such hate. Ignorance, unfortunately yes, but to see old men and women as well as right wing groups cause so much harm. It sets this country back many years. However, as a member of this community we should be applauded and pat ourselves on our backs for going through with the parade, which was a success instead of having it called off because of a few threats. The police also handled the situation fairly. However in today's court proceedings against those arrested, many of the cases were thrown out. Apparently it's not against the law and protected free speech to throw eggs and call someone homophobic names.
