Gravatar Sad, sad. And pointless.

You must be oh so careful in this world. For all the beauty and kindness you find, there's a lot of evil and danger as well.

Gravatar Someone made the comment on Towleroad that this guy should be fed into a wood-chipper - feet first.

Couldn't agree more.

Gravatar Sadly, happens every day in some form or another. Sad, sad...

Gravatar Evil incarnate. I hope he fries.

Gravatar Read about this one the other..and found it to be shocking and senseless. Why kill the kid? Rob the guy and leave...

Sad indeed.

===

Do not bring strangers home with you!

Gravatar This guys should be executed, mentally ill or not.

I'm not blaming the victim or his friends, but where the hell was his wingman? I would never get sloppy drunk without a reasonably sober buddy nearby, and I've held many a friend's hair out of many a toilet while she barfed, then got her safely home.

Partying is and should be a team effort.

Gravatar The kid is 18 .. Everyone dropped the ball on this one .

Pointing the blame on the parents or the roomate or the kids poor choices arent going to bring him back .

I guess when Mr. Cancel goes to jail and the boys are enjoying themselves , hopefully HE won't have a problem with that..

Gravatar "Pravia, who was gay, was known as a hard partyer who dated a lot of men and would sometimes use drugs in social settings"

Notice here how the victim is being devalued- why are all young gay murder victims accused of being addicts?

What a senseless loss of life.

Gravatar might be insane

Gravatar so sad...just shows how life can change in an instant. My thoughts and paryer's to his friends and family. The murderer, is beyond tragic.

Gravatar poor kid...you really have to be careful these days.
the sadistic cancel should be kept in prison for the rest of his life.

Gravatar World o Jeff,

I agree. Here in Toronto there have been two brutal murders that spring to mind and in each case, the media has portrayed the victim in such a manner as to suggest that they were almost asking for it.

The most recent involved a man who was stabbed multiple times in his apartment.

One particularly nasty "journalist" referred to one of the victims as a "drama queen". He was the former owner of The Barn. The man is dead. Strange how the media devalues people who can't defend themselves.

Is it any wonder that both murders are so far unsolved?

Gravatar What a waste of oxygen, this sick PoS should be executed immediately.

Gravatar I hope they tear Mr Cancel up in prison so bad his innards fall out. Sorry, but he's evil.

Gravatar First this is horrible. But I have nagging questions in the back of my head.

Who purchases drugs on a streetcorner in NYC?

Who invites a street dealer up into his apartment? Alone none-the-less?

Who falls asleep with said street dealer still in the apartment with you?

I'm not blaming the victim so much as getting a feeling there's a more to this story. My gut instinct tells me they went back to the kid's apt. for more than a drug deal.

Gravatar CRACK COCAINE. What a terribly sad totally unnecessary evil act.

Gravatar I'm with Ryan christina; something else happened up there that's not gonna be told, sad to say. But yes, this guy needs to be put away; and I'm in faor of the death penalty, so um. yeah.

He can go now.

Gravatar Ryan and anon: Every third NYU student buys drugs on the street corner. You invite the dealer to your place to have company and possibly score more drugs for free. And if some of your "buddies" are dealers, you probably have no fear of having a dealer alone with you in your place. You fall asleep with them there because you are wasted. End of story.

Gravatar I just found it weird that the kid's in his boxers is all. I mean, this is just totally a messed up scenario. Little David, I don't know much about scoring (any drugs at all actually) so that makes sense and clears it up.

But still, out of all the people you can kill why this guy... eh, I don't know. It's not as if it matters what I know/don't know sad to say as the poor kid is gone and Cancel will be spending a long time in jail/getting the death penalty (doubt it). Making it into a homophobic 'gay panic' crap.

Gravatar --it into a gay panic crap is a waste of time*

Gravatar Please. the dealer reneged on his promise of sex for money but killed him because he still wanted the money and if anyone knows the slightest thing about crack cocaine, the story is as simple and sad as that. What a horrible tragedy and waste. Imagine what those that care for both of them have been plummeted into because of desires gone awry.

Gravatar A horrifying story. Sick and disgusting and SAD. Poor kid....I don't care if he was a partier or a druggie. we've all done dumb things, esp. at that age. I, too, hope his killer gets it good and plenty in prison. Maybe with a splintery broom handle!

Gravatar I'm gonna disagree with some of the people here and say that the media is not necessarily portraying the victim as "having asked for it" by mentioning his reputation as a "hard partyer".
As long as the information is true, it's nothing more than fact; just as much as acquaintances saying "he was a great, loving friend".
This information helps to explain how the chain of events led to its horrible conclusion.
My experience has shown me that when you involve yourself with illegal activity, there's a good chance you'll find yourself around some pretty horrible people, so you've got to be EXTRA careful. This isn't rocket science.
Take it as a grim warning.
Be careful, people.
Watch your self; watch your friends.

Oh, and i hope they hang this bastard, mental illness or not.

Gravatar It's true. If one stops doing drugs of any kind, your cirlce of friends and acquaintances become loving and supportive. Otherwise, the opposite occurs including madness and people who have become so desperate because they lost their souls and have no idea where to find it. As Cranyd says, it is all avoidable. This did not have to happen. I speak from my own experience. My greedy desires did not deserve violence of any kind but i put myself in situations by my choices. And this obviously is not being considered a random act of murder.

Gravatar unfortunately he is not naive and young anymore. He is dead.

Gravatar Nothing will happen to this sicko in jail. According to the poeple who are locked up, it's just another fag who was killed. He'll most likely be a hero to some. It's not like he's another Jeffery Dahmer.

Gravatar victim is already blamed and called a drug addict or lush.

Gravatar There are a lot of crazy people in the world.

My best friend is getting death threats from a marginal person he met on Craigslist. He took the guy on a weekend trip to a cabin in Napa and the creep tried to blackmail him, threatening him with a number of false allegations.

Now he's getting text messages that say, "I'm going to kill you." And he won't go to the police.

I guess I have better street smarts. Nothing like this has ever happened to me.

Gravatar I'm not sure I agree understand the commenters who are up in arms about the mention of Pravia's drug use. It's probably true. It doesn't mean he deserved to be murdered, but it does help to explain how it happened. This story might wake some people up to the fact that hard drugs and violence are inextricably tied together. We don't live in a magical world in which you can buy coke without contributing (monetarily or otherwise) to a system of murder, assault, and addiction.

Gravatar Oops. Strike "agree" from my first sentence.

Gravatar We can't believe what we read in the papers because the source is the killer. The kid may have been minding his own business, not looking for drugs, on his way into his apartment when he was assaulted.

Gravatar Bill in CT–

Read the story links for more details.

Where does it say that all the information the investigators have is only from the guy they have in custody?

It sounds as though the police have been interviewing a lot of people (people that were at the party that night, his room mate); as one would expect in a situation like this.

Sorry, but a disturbingly high number of people that get hurt or killed aren't just random victims walking down the street. They're involving themselves with crazy scumbags like this Cancel guy.

No sense to make the general public think that people not involved with his type are just as likely to be victims...because they're not.

Though sadly, there's no guarantee.

Gravatar Eh, I was under the impression the cops don't actually believe all of Cancel's version of events. The first report I read, I think at Towelroad, made it seem they thought he was lying about the drug dealing aspect.

p.s. His wingman was named Madonna. Madge didn't have his back.

Gravatar Being gay,enjoying sex,being a hard-partyer,dating lots of men = not a crime.

Murder is though.

Sad sad story...The victim is still a victim ; and should not be painted as a second-class citizen.

Gravatar @ Phoenix: p.s. His wingman was named Madonna. Madge didn't have his back.

Yeah, she did. The story says she was out of town for a few days. His mother texted her when her son went missing. She found his body.

I've never had only one wingman - when my bestie was away, there were always others who stepped up. And I've done the same thing; it's what real friends do.

This kid's social network failed him, and he's dead because of it. I'm not casting blame - kids are disorganized and don't have good judgment, and that's not their fault.

I just think that there's a lesson here.

I only surround myself with people who I admire and trust. The fact that I can have fun with them is a fantastic bonanza.

If you want to call yourself a friend, you have to have your buddy's back at all times and look out for his or her best interests. That is not always easy. It's hard to balance that with letting your friend just be who he or she is.

The safety of my friends is paramount, and I get called stupid shit like "Mother Hen" for bringing it up. I don't care. They know I love them and they are my family.

I'm glad I'm 41 instead of 21. My friends and I now have a greater chance of making it to 91.

Gravatar Thomas: "I'm glad I'm 41 instead of 21."

I agree. It is a different world, much more dangerous.

Gravatar "Notice here how the victim is being devalued- why are all young gay murder victims accused of being addict"

Occasionally using drugs in a social setting hardly marks him as an "addict." You obviously have no experience with these substances.

That said, I feel for the poor kid but he must have been really out of it to bring home a fat, ugly piece of work like Cancel.

Gravatar I love how a gay man's best friend is named Madonna.
I wish I knew someone named Madonna.
She could call me Guy.
Oh yeah, that kid who died, he was kind of cute, but I know his type.
If he made it to 27, it would be a miracle.
I am 21 years old living on my own here in San Francisco, and its stories like this that keep me away from drugs. I am terrified of drugs, and I never go home with anyone, and I always play safe.
Sometimes I think I'm missing out and i SHOULD TAKE ADVANTAGE OF MY LOOKS AND YOUTH. But hey, i want to have a big birthday bash for my 30th!! So I think i'm doing quite all right....

Gravatar "Because I wanted to. You got a problem with that?"

Actually...Yes. Yes we do have a problem with that...

Gravatar oh god. that poor boy. makes me so nervous when shit like that happens. when you run with that kind of scene you can't trust anyone. and that kid probably wasn't even that hard of a "partyer."

Gravatar what do you think chances of cancel having done something he wanted to do/try/curious about, then freaked out and killed kid in weird homophobe/drug/mental episode?
