I doubt she believes half the things she writes, including this. She is right though about the "tough as nails" bit... Camille is a contrarian by nature. I would not expect her to say anything much different than she did. She's been hyping her working class roots lately and her "beloved" talk radio. I expect her to soon have her own radio show. She saw how Dennis Miller did it, so she figures she can.

Paglia is an interesting writer and thinker. I don't always agree with her, but she always makes me think. But her status as the Ann Coulter of the left means that she likely doesn't believe half of what she says in public. Shameless shock-jock behavior is what it amounts to usually. But this? It's a little different. I've seen lots of normally intelligent and insightful boomer women being totally unreasonable when it comes to female candidates this year. It's as though they don't believe their own rhetoric, thinking instead that the current choices of Clinton and Palin are the only female candidates for executive office that will ever be offered for the vote. So these women are scrounging around looking for something... ANYTHING... that they can hang their hat on. It's sad, and not nearly as hopeful for true gender equality as they should be.

Paglia has been trotting out her Democratic affiliation to slam Democrats for years, and this is no different. I also remember her praising Bush as "gun slinger" during the 2000 election, and although Bush won a dubious victory that year, Paglia's first impression was as wrong as it could be. Obama/Biden is the real "more of the same" ticket. Entrenched Washington interests, corporate backing, rich, urban academic perspective. Um, hello- we've had that for the last 8 years. I love Camille Paglia, cranky, loopy warts and all. She's wrong about so many things, but she's one of the few people you never have to ask "tell us what you really think, Camille." Palin is exactly her kind of "feminist," as laughable as that is. She's right that Palin is "tough as nails" though; she's always had a thing for vagina dentata. Even though I think Palin will be a net negative for McCain's bid for the White House, I also think Democrats are underestimating her naked ambition.

Palin gave a standard Republican speech. I do not like her personality very much but she may appeal to the conservative base.
The republicans want a permanent majority and if McCain wins they may get that. Repubs will set Palin up to be President one day. I dread the idea that we may have nearly 20 years of Republican rule but it may happen.
I guess I will have to cope and when I cannot anymore I guess Toronto will be by future home.

@Ish - you are right on the mark! However, I think we underestimate Palin at our own peril. She is so frightening - but we probably won't see any of that until after (God forbid) she is in office. I can't imagine why Tom was "moved" or what he found "incredible" but I'll bet he is not alone in those feelings. Her delivery was excellent (her voice really grates on me) and she clearly knew how to play the crowd but there was absolutely nothing of substance in anything she said. Oh - before I forget - who gives a shit what Camille Paglia thinks? She's has always seemed so unaware of the political world around her. Her comment about Palin's speech proves it as far as I'm concerned.
