The book highlights what I think has become a lost art in our modern culture... being "present" in the moment. At prayer meetings we often quote the scripture, "Where two or three are present, I will be in your midst" and then proceed to ask God to come join us. We declare God to be Omni-present, so it would seem to be the greater need for us to "show up" and be present in His presence.
I recently read this quote, "Love is a choice - not simply, or necessarily, a rational choice, but rather a willingness to be present to others without pretense or guile." (Carter Heyward)

Another thing I appreciated about the book was that it seemed to flesh out what Christ was saying in Matthew 6. Yes, there are issues about food & clothing (the basic stuff of life), or in Morrie's case, wiping his butt, but he wouldn't allow them to distract him from engaging life.
It is so easy to let the past (shame, guilt, should have's, etc.) or the future (anxiety, fears, what if's, etc) to overwhelm us so that we end up with too much past or future and not enough "now".
This is where the rationalistic bent of western culture handcuffs us. We keep trying to live life through our intellect instead of our senses. Christ's emphasis on seeing, hearing, smelling, touching, etc. continue to draw us back into the present moment, where He is.
