I totally prefer to host my own blog, but that's more for personal reasons of having utmost control over what it looks like and how it operates. I can get as geeky as I want. But that's an additional cost you'd have to deal w/. I've never been a fan of haloscan, but I do like blogger for what it is - a very very basic blogging app.

Try this: http://www.blogsome.com/ - that might be what you're looking for. It uses Wordpress, a very good and powerful blogging tool. And I think it does gravatars in the comments, or at least I know it's capable of that.

Oh, and it's free.
