It really doesn't seem to me that properly applied, these two views would look any different in day-to-day life, with both spouses loving and submitting/serving/helping each other and following God. It seems to me that it all comes down to lovingly putting the other person first, which the words submitting/serving/helping all imply.

That's kinda what I'm getting at. If this is true, you would think this area wouldn't be such a big deal/hot topic.
Perhaps it's not when properly applied that they look alike but when improperly applied that we could find significant differences?

I agree with your sister. But on the one side you have the "purists" who think everything is a black and white paradigm and on the other you have the "liberationists" (my terms) who feel that oppression entails throwing out the baby with the bathwater.
