He's been one of my favorite authors for years. For entirely different reason, I would suggest The Monkey Ranch Gang or Desert Solitaire as a good place to start.

Rumor has it, that during his time at UNM he went outside of town and started a tire fire in an extinct volcano. He definitely liked the torch billboards in his spare time.
