While the same crap goes on in most of the Western world, it would seem that Amerika is well out in front in terms of the criminal insanity and general lousiness of its inhabitants. Anyone who isn't insane would be well advised to get the hell out of it.

You are exactly right. It is a common tactic for prosecutors to "overcharge", i.e. exaggerate the offense, to get defendants to plea to what they are really suspected of. Moreover, their own public defenders are ill equipped to defend them and urge taking pleas. Poor defendants would be crazy to risk trial since their resources for defense are vastly outweighed by the prosecutor's.
I recall that in many of my cases as a prosecutor, I would have been embarrassed to go to trial on the flimsy evidence I had, but the defendants almost always went for a plea. The risk of calling my bluff was too great.
I hope I don't have to hang out in purgatory too long for what I did. I was young and naive.
The other night I saw a guy on Larry King that was put on death row even though it was proven he was in jail when the murder he was accused of took place. I blame this outrage on the prosecutors. This type of thing happens way too much...
