Interesting. I tried to get a cheap return from Shrewsbury to Darlington and the cheapest I could find was just over £70 return. Using your 2 single fare method I can actually get it to just over £60 return. Yes, always assumed return would be cheaper.

But with regard to your environment point, I may save 76% on emissions, but it would cost us £130 by train but £30 by car. And why is it I can get the train to London for £15 but Darlington (same distance) is £130!?
