I'm impressed with your recall abilities. This must have been on your mind for a while.

"What does motivate children to do the work the school tells them to?"

I was never really motivated to begin with in school. Mostly, I see know, based on parental non-involvement on an educational level. My wife and I try to be involved with our kids' day school and look for what interestests our kids.

I believe, not based on much but experience and observation it's the parents and the way material is presented. Rewards (games in the back of the room) help too. Kids need to believe that they CAN do the work.
