Gravatar hey, how does your iphone work in europe? did you need to get a new SIMM card? are you gonna get hit with any special roming charges? or did you pick a special international plan before you left?

i realize you got other things on your mind now. but this summer i'm facing my first international trip since i was iphoned. i'm trying to decide if it's worth taking.

Gravatar Being a regular Belgian reader of your blog, I couldn't resist: Uccle (or Ukkel in Dutch -- no "specific" meaning, it's just the name of a town that is part of the Brussels Capital Region, like Sint-Gillis to your left, and Elsene to your right) is actually more of a residential "suburb" of Brussels (the actual city centre is a pentagram-shaped form to your north).
There's supposed to be quite a bit of green there, though (with the FĂ´ret de Soignes / Sonian Forest).
Bref, enjoy your stay!!
Very best,
Peter

Gravatar Peter, thanks for the tip! Just came back from an ecological tour of a large nearby park, so you're right about the green.

Jeremy, I didn't do anything with the phone, so it's not working as a phone. I'm using it for Internet in hot spots (or I will if I can find someplace free--I paid 13 euros for 24 hours of access from my hotel but that's crazy expensive. There are free hotspots in the city center, I believe, but I haven't found any here:

Gravatar Berkeley academics also mad for powerpoint...which is about 98% (power)pointless...though it sure makes pretty charts & graphs.

Looking forward to hearing more on the intersection of nature/theory!

Gravatar Dude! I'm there about three times a year now, and love it. My company has an office down on Avenue Louise and they are techtarded.
Drink Leffe Blonde, eat frites, and peruse and try a chocolate at Pierre Marcolini down at Sablon. Also, if you are in need of beer buddies, I have friends who would happily go out.
Be well, enjoy the sleep whilst you can I went over when Owen was just 6 weeks, and it was hard.

Gravatar My pleasure!

By the by, if you happen to have a bit of spare time, the Victor Horta house/museum definitely is worth a visit & quite nearby, in St-Gilles(!) ), as is the Palais Stoclet, by the Viennese J. Hoffmann (although one cannot access it, and it's not as near as Horta's).

(Also, when it comes to Belgian chocolates, I actually prefer Wittamer's expensive, but oh so tasty treats -- located on the Grand Sablon too )

Vriendelijke groet,

Peter

Gravatar Excuse moi, messieur why do you think references to psychoanalysis are quaint? Oh, these Americans We EUROPEANS (especially middle-eastern europeans) still psychoanalyze brilliantly
Josh, I can't find your e-mail anywhere. Will you write me, so we can keep in touch? Also, if you could send some more of those lovely pictures (which make me feel nostalgic for Brussels), I'd be grateful. I enjoyed reading your blog and am going to read more of your poetry!!! (Julia Fiedorczuk from Poland)
