Interesting that FL requires disclosure. I had a post-op infection after a same-day surgery laporoscopy to remove uterine fibroids 2 years ago... took 3 rounds of antibiotics to clear it up... a friend of mine ended up with a post-op infection at this same surgery center around the same time as me that took IV antibiotics to clear up... wonder if this is just dumb luck or if this place had a high rate of post-op infections??

I have mixed feelings...after all we don't own the patients, and if they are dying, I am certain mine is not the last face they would like to see, but rather, a cherished grandchild, etc.
On the other hand, I am horrified every time I walk past the ICU and see children playing on the floor in the germs that inevitably come to the waiting room on family members shoes. Perhaps we just need more structured rules.
On reporting infections...I love transparency. It is the best way to effect change. I post all of our cardiac data on a regular basis, and give each physician a report card, and you wouldn't believe how much it can impact their practice.

I am equally amazed when I tell visitors explicitly what precautions to take to then walk into a room and see them blatantly disregarding my instructions. I hear (and feel) your frustration!

I would expect the patients who are really bad to have whoever they would like to visit, ESPECIALLY at the end of life. I am talking about stable patients in regard to limiting visitors. I should have put that in there, sorry!

I'm amazed too when I walk into a room to check on a patient that we've dropped off (EMS) and find how many people they can possibly fit into a room. Many of whom should not be around a patient about to go into surgery.
