Scary how those behaviors are common in other hospitals too.....I've witnessed an example of each and every one of those.
Your patients are way more at risk of receiving an infectious agent from the toddlers than the toddlers are at risk for picking something up in a dirty hospital. That's the reason to exclude them.

The other night a patient told a nurse that she hopes the nurse dies, and that she hopes nurse's kids die. This was all because the nurse was discharging the patient, and the patient didn't want to leave.
Sometimes I don't know what's worse, being physically hit by a patient, or hearing stuff like what I posted above.
Flea, while I do agree that kids bring in some of the worst germs, it's the Clostridium difficile spore that people get colonized with that really is getting out of hand.. MRSA is mutating as well and I would hate to see a rise in younger and younger people becoming infected..

Jenn, Karma will come back and bite people in the ass.. When I hear the nasty, evil things.. I just remember the wonderful and nice things other patients say and it gets me through..
Thanks for the great laugh. I am very good at having patience with people, and I usually stay fairly calm.
However, the first patient who tried my patience was a COPD patient who unhooked her oxygen to go downstairs to smoke. A few minutes later, a call.... my patient couldn't get back upstairs after smoking. We had to go fetch her.
It was all I could do....... to not scream!
Mandy, Smoking COPDers are some of the worst about continuing to smoke to the detriment of their health. Then they become demanding and really cranky when they can't breathe..
Well, I'll try to remember that it's satire. But it's awfully hard to remember when:
Your doctor says you can go home, the nurse won't let you AND WON"T TELL YOU WHY;
You press the call button, no-one comes for several minutes so you press again, and then get YELLED AT. AT 3:30 AM Why did you think I pressed the button? Could it have been the bleeding?
Think this is unusual? I've spent a total of 6+ weeks in hospital over the last 2 years with wife (Cancer 2x), Child (Facial reconstruction) and Mother (3x, various) and can count on the finger of one foot the number of nurses/doctors/med "professionals" who took the time to explain ANYTHING without serious pressure from me or my wife. Or acted like they gave a %&^% about anything except the end of the shift. This is why patients are not your allies in the fight against Insurance companies. For the most part, we hate being under your care.
