I'm sorry to hear about your daughter and hope all turns out fine. Ditto on the luck and not the smarts part on avoiding spooky infections in my not-as-smart younger days. AND there is a new vaccine, JUST approved, against HPV. I think it is for ages 12 and up. Add it to the line-up of shots and count the happy kids

What's bad about this infection is that you can't see it sometimes for years. It can spontaneously clear up and you may think that you are safe.. Scary..

Sorry to hear about your daughter. My mother also has HPV is the past and her cleared up. I am thankful for the vaccine but am going to wait before my girls get it since it is still so new and there were some reports of women have babies with birth defects and also it was tested on very few 9 year old girls (vaccine is approved for 9 year olds).

Hopefully your daughter will be one of the majority that clears the virus before treatment is needed. I've sent many for colposcopy with LSIL paps that are negative by the time they are seen by gyn. if we just knew which ones will progress and which ones won't. That's why I think the vaccine will be a good thing.
To anonymous: Being a little conservative when something is new is a good thing but: Where are these reports of babies with birth defects? The vaccine is Pregnancy Class B, and subjects who became pregnant after vaccination had the same rate of adverse events as did the placebo group.

Anonymous, I am glad that your Mom has cleared up. It must be devastating to have.. My sister has the virus as well.
So far, no cervical changes with her. I hope the vaccine doesn't cause birth defects.. It would be horrible!

check the FDA web site for current clinical trials - i believe there are trials ongoing for tests of a potential TREATMENT for HPV infections...the vaccine is only for prevention.

tk, it would be nice if we could know which ones would progress to cervical changes. I know that some strains are more prone.

years ago, they didn't isolate the strains that caused cancer, this has only been around since like 2000.
also, i'm pretty sure, forgive me if i'm wrong, but once you have the virus, you are a carrier forever. the numbers of carriers are outragous.......1 in 3 adults.
i'm soooooooo glad for the vaccine for younger generations, but i also worry about long term effects since i'm extremely anti-vax.
the cervical vaccine being one of the classical " childhood vaccines" is a big debate now. oh well........i don't think babies need the hepatitis vaccine, but who am i to say?

Jen, From what I know, once you have HPV you will always have it.. One may not be active with the wart syndrom part of it.. I don't think that children should receive it but it should be an option for teens.

In 1995, I had to have a LEEP procedure performed. I was 28. I had abnormal Paps for several years, but was always told that it was nothing serious. After the LEEP, I had one doctor tell me it was early-stage cancer, and another tell me it was severe dysplasia. Whatever it was, I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that it was caused by HPV (though I've never been tested.) My first "serious" boyfriend wasn't faithful to me, and I wonder how many of the other girls got HPV from him. I also wonder how many of those girls became women that were diagnosed with some form of dysplasia or cancer. I will make sure my daughters receive this vaccine when they are teenagers--though I teach abstinence, they may choose to have sex that young--but I don't want them to possibly have to face cancer.
I wish I had known all of this 18 years ago when I fell for the creep with the secret harem--or at least had known about his harem!
Thanks for clearing some of the HPV info up for me--there isn't much to read right now except for what is on those little cards they're putting in magazines. I hope your daughter is one of the blessed ones and this nasty virus goes away.

SHJ, Back in the day, not much was know about HPV and people never knew that they had it unless they showed up with visible warts. Because one can be a carrier with no overt symptoms, one can spread this indiscriminately. It's especially hard when someone is in a new relationship and the cheating card gets thrown in. They will probably never know exactly who they got it from. I'm sorry that you had a man who cheated and I hope that he gets his just deserts! Thanks for commenting!
