Excellent illustrations about branding. The smokestakes and the hummer really ring true as examples.
I especially appreciate the admonition, "...your brand is not what you say it is. It's what the public says it is." That is a lesson I wish many government and non-profits could get when they throw out in a meeting, "Let's think up a logo and slogan, and brand ourselves."
All this reminds my twisted brain of the themesong from the 60s TV show, Branded: "Branded, scorned as the one who ran. What do you do when you are branded, and you know you're a man? Wherever you for the rest of your life you must prooooove you're a man." I am sure this has some relevance!
