Gravatar Some day when they look back on the infancy of the blogosphere and nominate its earliest and best practitioners of cultural commentary, they're going to cite your site. Your coffee compilation is wonderful. And I'm so glad you remembered Bach. Will the Internet ever be ready for Alban Berg's "Der Wein?" When it is, the lion will be sleeping beside the lamb and both creatures will be vegetarians. In the mean time, thanks for your efforts and Merry Christmas.

Gravatar this was superb. superb. i wrote my own rather wordy piece on coffee yesterday, and am quite jealous. by the way, the greatest coffee movie to me is the 1974 french flic 'la maman et la putain,' which spends about half its 3 1/2 hour running time in the cafe de flore. also, it's often forgotten that the inspiration for the eponymous act in pope's 'the rape of the lock' is the wafting coffee vapors infecting the baron's brain.

Gravatar Thoroughly enjoyed this post. Awesome.

Gravatar Excellent article!! Don't forget the ska tune One Cup of Coffee by Bob Marley!!

Gravatar brilliant...simply brilliant...i echo the sentiments of the first comment...

Gravatar You forgot TMCM: http://www.tmcm.com

Gravatar Simply incredible! A tremendous amount of entertainment and information! And so well presented. Hall of Fame material.

Gravatar Very amusing - it reminded me of a great Merinque song by Juan Luis Guerra "Ojala que llueva Cafe" also covered by Cafe Tacuba

Gravatar Well done! This is absolutely the best thing I have ever encountered in a blog.

Gravatar Not only was this a brilliantly thoughtful, multi-faceted, and genuinely informative post, it's about the keystone to my very existence. Absolutely fantastic - and that's to say nothing of the stellar songs you selected to complement the piece. You're in a class all your own.

Oh, and Merry Christmas!

Gravatar I'm no german, but you got your translation mostly correct.

Und wenn jemand mich will laben

and *if* someone wants to give me a treat

Ach, so

most modern germans pronounce that as one word in speak, either achso, or aso, which basically means "then"

then pour me a cup...

three semesters is all you really need to speak german anyways.

Gravatar very interesting! you forgot the Navy and it's union with coffee, though. In boot camp, the new recruits sometimes take a turn at tidying up various offices, as part of a "work week". The petty officers sometimes get back at one another by telling the unwitting recruits to wash the other sailor's coffee cup, and be sure to get all that black stuff off!

Gravatar This is Great!
this is one of those moments when you forgetso somehow forget about the senselessness of the internet!
and the compilation is ga great lin practically as well!
Thankyou Indeed!

Gravatar This is really great...you makes my days...I love coffee and never without it...Oh! what a life without those black steamy coffee!!...Thanks for the great posting...Have a nice day...

Gravatar Frank Sinatra - The Coffee Song:

Way down among Brazilians
Coffee beans grow by the billions
So they've got to find those extra cups to fill
They've got an awful lot of coffee in Brazil

You can't get cherry soda'Cause they've got to fill that quota
And the way things are I'll bet they never will
They've got a zillion tons of coffee in Brazil

No tea or tomato juice
You'll see no potato juice
The planters down in Santos all say no no no

The politician's daughter
Was accused of drinking water
And was fined a great big fifty dollar bill
They've got an awful lot of coffee in Brazil

You date a girl and find out laterShe smells just like a
percolator
Her perfume was made right on the grill
Why they could percolate the ocean in Brazil

And when their ham and eggs need savor
Coffee ketchup gives 'em flavor
Coffee pickles way outsell the dill
Why they put coffee in the coffee in Brazil

So your lead to the local color
Serving coffee with a cruller
Dunking doesn't take a lot of skill
They've got an awful lot of coffee in Brazil

Gravatar I nominate the Larks's "Coffee, Cigarettes, and Tears."

Nice piece.

Gravatar Is anyone compiling a CD?

you could also include

Fred Waring's "Let's have another cup of coffee (and Let's have another piece of pie";
The Coffee Break Song from Frank Loesser's "How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying";
and
"Coffee in a Cardboard Cup" from Kander & Ebbs "70, Girls, 70."
