Some additional stuff:
The version of "horsebreaker star" that I linked to is an inferior U.S. version--seven tracks from the original 2-Cd set (24 tracks in all) were deleted and a song from another McLennan record, "fireboy," was flown in for some reason. Try to find the import version if you're interested.
Most of McLennan's other solo albums--Fireboy, In Your Bright Ray, Watershed--are almost as good, and most are out of print. You can find them cheap (at least right now) on various sites.
The Go-Betweens' original six albums are all wonderful, though my favorites are Liberty Belle and the Black Express and Tallulah. They were an incredibly consistent band, which meant they recorded few outright duds, but also meant that there is no essential album in their oeuvre.
The best GB's compilation came out soon after the band split up--it was called "1978-1990". The CD version cut about six or seven tracks from it, and even that disc is pretty rare these days, I think.
And of course, the Go-Betweens reformed around the turn of the century and made a number of very solid records--"Friends of Rachel Worth", "Oceans Apart." They will be greatly, greatly missed.
Well done. As far as I can tell, the music blog o' sphere is embarrassingly quiet about this, despite the fact that Pitchfreak headlined with it this morning. Oh well.

I only discovered the Go-Betweens about 5 years ago, but I've been loving them ever since. I'm very saddened by the news about Grant.
Saw GW in Chicago a few years back. Watershed is just super. Damn shame.

hi - many thanks for the Horsebreaker Star stuff, I've got all of Robert's solo stuff but had left Grant at Watershed which i now very obviously regret, especially after listening to these tracks. I've bought all his albums now and am waiting for them to arrive.
