Gravatar wtf?

Gravatar Unclemeat, Levant is advocating the rule of men, rather than the rule of law.

The vague definitions of piracy and terrorism to many and all are such that any militia given the power to summarily execute their prisoners would give rise to massacres.

Gravatar I think Levant is advocating the rule of law (i.e. The Constitution) which is supposedly the basis of our present legal system. The right of free speech would presumably trump the CHRC and their attempt to stifle it. Without section 13 of the CHRC we probably wouldn't be having this discussion.

Gravatar Even freighters carrying food aid for their fellow Africans are not immune to their ransom efforts.

Wow, even freighters carrying food aid.

Would it be impolite to mention the following?

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Israel has allowed a former U.S. congresswoman, Cynthia McKinney, to return home days after detaining her and other activists on board a ship carrying relief supplies for Gaza, a pro-Palestinian group said on Monday.

Israeli authorities intercepted the vessel, which had 21 activists on board, on June 30 and said it would not be permitted to enter Gaza's coastal waters because of security risks in the area and an existing naval blockade."

Israel's UN ambassador defended the seizure to the aid-bearing ship no the grounds that its successful arrival would have been a "propaganda" success: perish the thought, and a few more Palestinians denied aid as well.

Oh, and on that blockade, which UN official Richard Falk has declared "unlawful," Noam Chomsky quotes Peter Beaumont in The Guardian:

"One crucial element of Israel's siege, little reported, is the naval blockade. Peter Beaumont reports from Gaza that "On its coastal littoral, Gaza's limitations are marked by a different fence where the bars are Israeli gunboats with their huge wakes, scurrying beyond the Palestinian fishing boats and preventing them from going outside a zone imposed by the warships." (Guardian, 27 May). According to reports from the scene, the naval siege has been tightened steadily since 2000. Fishing boats have been driven steadily out of Gaza's territorial waters and towards the shore by Israeli gunboats, often violently without warning and with many casualties. As a result of these naval actions, Gaza's fishing industry has virtually collapsed; fishing is impossible near shore because of the contamination caused by Israel's regular attacks, including the destruction of power plants and sewage facilities."

Unlawful acts at sea are to be deplored no matter who carries them out.

Gravatar Happily, it's really only the Nutty Post that doesn't ignore Newman of Alberta altogether. And, next year I might be able to buy all that remains of that birdcage liner paper with my tax return.

Gravatar Unclemeat: Except the point of the post which you're missing is that Levant is apparently eager to eliminate other, even more fundamental rights - such as the right not to be summarily executed without a trial. (Which some of us consider to be based on universal principles rather than being something that can be weaseled out of by claiming a constitution doesn't apply.)

Stephen: Impolite? To some. Timely? Absolutely.

DaleK: Were that it were so, but he seems to have at least a few outlets (with the regular Canadian Lawyer column itself being one which people might not know about) - not to mention a substantial chunk of Greater Wingnuttia eager to send eyes and donations his way.

Gravatar You have articulated a non-issue, and taken Levant's words completely out of context. He is referring to the manner in which the CHRC apparently operates outside of the law, which is tantamount to piracy and should be summarily done away with.
