What do you supposed was behind Harper's insistence, not once but twice, that he was definitely not a Catholic?
I'd tend to give him the benefit of the doubt to the extent of it being an attempt to avoid being seen as giving an inaccurate perception, rather than representing an effort to portray himself as better than Catholics for the distinction. But it probably does come closer than anything else that's been said in the matter to actually driving a wedge between the two.
