The design process isn't really able to be pinned down. That's its nature. I start with the yarn, usually. The look and feel of it seems to indicate something about how it will be best displayed. But some of this goes to the many many many years of knitting experience that the designer has under his/her belt.
I don't think there is a method or process to design since design is all about creativity but if you could do a series of steps to pin down the creative process the first one would be procrastinate.
