Gravatar So, the Columbian goalie scored?! That definitely doesn't (much).

Looks like the ball took an unusually high bounce.

Wonder if that'll be on SportsCenter?
Mike

Gravatar Well, it's official.

Goalies have now scored more times than bass players.

Gravatar Ike ... great line.

Gravatar That's what he gets for playing so far off his line when the opposing keeper has the ball in his hands.

I have been told a thousand times (goalkeeper here in olden days, now a coach as you are, John) to "play higher." I understand the rationale (get to through balls, etc.) but this is the example that proves the rule. IF YOU ARE SO FAR UP YOU CAN BE PLAYED OVER YOUR HEAD, YOU WILL BE (EVENTUALLY).

Stay on your line, but play the angles and proceed forward from it judiciously. Most times cutting the angle kills the threat most effectively, but I've yet to see a keeper at the 18 on a kickoff (who was any good). There's a reason for that - geometry and physics are still not the keeper's friend.

Five days til the Cup starts, woohoo!

Gravatar Mark, great comments.

I had an interesting experience this weekend. My team's opponent didn't show up for an indoor game, so we played a intra-squad scrimmage with me and the assistant coach serving as keepers.

I often found myself floating up high when we had the ball deep, and then I'd realize how badly I was out of position as the counter attack bore down on me. I had to scramble several times and almost fell down once.

Hopefully keeper coaches around the world are using that video to teach their charges how not to fall asleep!
