Gravatar My father-in-law works part time at Home Depot but he would fully support your switching to Lowes. Lowes has better selection anyway.

Sorry you had to go through that. I hope someone higher than Fred found out about it.

Gravatar I've actually been doing quite a bit of shopping at Lowe's lately due to some home renovations we've got going on, and Home Depot's complete lack of service.

Lowe's has Home Depot beat coming and going. The people are helpful, their installation teams are top-notch and their selection is more geared to the homeowner than the contractor.

Gravatar Even though I can get to Home Depot much easier, I always fight the 59 traffic to go to Lowe's these days because of issues with service and selection.

Now you have given me another reason to keep going to Lowe's.

Gravatar Obviously the guy was scared because he ran away, but honestly John, I don't know how you kept your temper in this situation.

I would have wanted to burn the store to the ground.

Gravatar Makes me want to sell my shares of Home Depot stock.

As a marketing professional, what do you think The Home Depot as a corporation should do? A) Fire the manager. B) write you a public note of apology C) Institute more training for managers & employees D)Get a better screening process for employees to begin with -- someone who uses that type of language should never be in a position that comes in contact with the public (whoops, I started to rant!)

E) all of the above.

Gravatar Chris:

I think a short note of apology would be fine, although I can see the lawyers having fits over admitting there was a problem.

The key to all this, of course, is simple communication. A lot can be solved when people are rationale and attempt to reach out. We never would have had a problem in the first place had the store's employees simply been more helpful in the first place. But their insistence that we were wrong about the special financing -- when it was plastered across the front of the store -- escalated the situation.

Gravatar SHAMEFUL!

Take your business to Lowes (and not just because I own stock). A few months ago I was building a shelf so I stopped at HD to get some 2x4's, I only needed one, but I needed it cut to size, Home Depot wanted to charge me $1 per cut, so $3 for a $2.50 2x4. I ended up going to Lowes because HD didn't have the rest of the things I needed and they ended up cutting the 2x4 for FREE!

Gravatar Michael, as a former Special Services associate for Home Depot, let me apologize to you first. The first cut on any piece of wood has been - and still is, as of three weeks ago - free. Subsequent cuts are only fifty cents. And John, I especially apologize to you. As a Special Services associate, it was my job to be the customer's (not the store's)first line of defense on service issues. This was an offense that goes beyond simple counseling, and should have been escalated beyond the store level. I worked damn hard to take care of all of our customers and - long after my time "bleeding orange" was over - it's still profoundly painful to read of your experience and the comments of your readers. Lowe's is in fact kicking HD's ass in one of the two most important basics: customer service. HD no longer grasps the concept that you need good service to keep the customers coming in and paying for even more bodies and even better service. I finally left the company when the frustration got to be too much. One can only apologize for one's employer so much.

Gravatar I would be out in front, with my cell phone ready to call the cops, holdng a sign with 4 inch high letters saying, "Why did the manager here call my wife a c*nt?" "What does he call yours?" hanging on my back side. Then just wait. Win win I think.

Gravatar Home Depot clearly needs more people like Whitney.

Gravatar Empathy… a bit of effort to remember how you like to be treated any time you are a costumer and not behind the counter, that’s what everybody needs to remember whenever treating with costumers.

This is unbelievable, this guy “fred” couldn’t imagine how far this issue will go, I’m reading this from Sinaloa, Mexico and posting it in my blog tomorrow, so people would know better when attending to any costumers.

Gravatar Never ever walk in to a telephone helpdesk.

Frustrating job, frustrated people, they have to be able to let it out once in a while. I pitty the guy for not choosing the right moment.
And, this was all the manager's fault, he should train his staff so they know about promotions. imho.

Gravatar HOME DEPOT GOES DOWN THE TOILET.

They lost my door order. They lost my bathtub AFTER it was delivered to the store. And now they screwed up my carpet order, and even though the nice employee cancelled the order, the manager still billed me....a fight that is still continuing.

The Dalles store manager Robert Tilton won't return my phone calls.

They cannot run a store without customers. I bought over $50k in appliances, fixtures, plumbing and the like, so if they treat me like this, then good luck!

Home Depot has gone from good, to not caring!!!

Gravatar I appreciate you posting your blog. I was an employee for 10 years for Home Depot, and battled with management constantly over the way they treated customers, and there comments were, "Awe they'll be back" Home Depot thinks they are invincible. We need to rally to get consumers to stop buying from this Corporate Beast. They think they are invincible. They are motivated by the bottom line, and so we must hit the bottom line. Go to my site at

Gravatar Get a life. So you didn;t like the way you where treated. Move on and quit writting about it.

Gravatar WE BOUGHT A DOOR FROM HOME DEPOT FOR OUR FIRST NEW HOUSE AND THE DOOR CAME ALTERED THE HOLES WERE TO BIG TO FIT ANY DOOR HANDLE AND WHILE TRYING TO RECEIVE A NEW DOOR FROM THEM HOME DEPOT SAID THAT WE ALTERED THE DOOR AND WERE OUT THREE THOUSANDS DOLLARS AFTER SPENDING OVER FIFITY THOUSAND DOLLARS ON THAT PLACE WE WILL NEVER SHOP THERE FOR ANYTHING AGAIN THE MANAGERS HAD NO IDEA HOW TO DO THEIR JOBS AND THE CUSTMER SERVICE SUCKED

Gravatar Good luck getting anything from home depot I know I will never step inside the store again- when I called customer service my call was answered in India - Sorry I am in America and would like to speak to someone with clear english. And that was just the beginning of my battle with Home Hades
I now shop at Lowes and it is nice to be treated with good customer service

Gravatar I was with the Depot and was dismissed by the new manager(he was there only 7 months) for not completing an assignments on his time schedule. I'm sorry I put my customers needs and wants before the manager's wants, this costed me my job. He said I did not perpare my dept. for the coming season. When it only you and two others (one being part-time) it is hard to complete everything on a timly base.

Gravatar I spent over $500.000 with home depot in about 20 months and was treated like I didn't matter, new store manger said it was about his bonus, not my problem,I have called corp and they just won't call back, one lady told me not to waste my time, they never settle
Contacted the BBB and they are for the retailer not the customer
I have spent a year trying to get my problem taken care of and now it's off to court
Never in my life would I exspect a giant retailer to treat customers like this , but I think the bean counters have some insight to this new concept

Gravatar I just have to ask after reading these boards. I feel sorry for the employees of home depot. The pay sound to be a tad on the low side. But once you get into decent pay you have to work 55 plus hours. I guess you cannot have a family, life, hobbies or anything else when you have to work that many hours. Do you know that the USA work there employees more hours then ANY country in the "free" world". That is a fact just research it. I do not understand why someone would want to throw away the best part of there life working so many hours. Have you guys looked into unions? I am not pushing a union or saying it is the best thing. I do know and it is a fact that unuion people tend to make an average of 34% more money. Just something to think about. And no a company cannot fire you for trying to get a unuion. If they do you will become very rich because it is against the law for any company to try to stop you from joining a unuion.. Do as you want it if your future and you only live once. Enjoy it with better wages and benifits.

Gravatar As a consumer, you really should better understand your credit card company that you utilize. If you would read your statements and check into it further you may better understand. When companies offer a "no interested no payment" program it is done in conjunction with the Credit company, in the case of The Home Depot it is Citi bank (try reading your statements). These offers are automatic based on meeting the criteria for the offer. I believe in the case of Home Depot it is purchases over 299.00. The normal program for their card is 6 months no interest no payments for these purchases.. the store does not have to do a thing.. it is automatic on the purchase amount and set by Citi bank.. Learn how to understand credit usage processes.. you may not show up as not having any common sense in the future.

Gravatar yea, home depot sucks, can you believe it.
i went to the store in towson md, i spend $7500 a year in this store, anyway, went with my 18 year old daughter,12 year old son, while picking 2x4s two employees come closer to check out my daughter and knock over a stack of 2x8s on my son, nailed him in the shoulder, employee 1 says wow how did that happen with a smile, i say get help, he says, i didn't do it, i say get help now, my son is hurt, no help comes so i decide to take him to the hospital, getting out of the store i run into employee 1 again, and he says with a big smile, i didn't do it, i say get the store manager, we wait 15 minutes, no manager, floor manager ignores us, we leave for hospital, and floor manager comes out to the van and says hey! i;m trying to help you, i called corporate and complained, asked for an apology, they seemed to be very concerned, after a week i called again, and they said tough luck call your insurance co.
my thanks to cory at the towson home depot in md. what kind of trash hits a kid then smiles and says so what.
i will never shop depot again, all i wanted was an apology

Gravatar Hi, I hope your problem is already solved, I'm mexican and i work at Home Depot as cashier.
I know the service sometimes isn't what the customers expects, But an employe who acts that way isn't ready

Gravatar AFRICAN AMERICANS DISCRIMINATION BY LARGE

COMPANIES ENOUGH IS ENOUGH
The Home Depot
Has No Respect
For African Americans. They giver lower pay to African Americans and give false reviews to keep them from moving up in the company!
We need help ASAP before this thing snowballs out of control!

We need a profound leader in the community that recognizes the first item on their agenda as a priority “Fair treatment“. Reaching out to Civil Rights Activist/Agencies, for some promising answers, will hopefully lead to a destination of hope concerning our Civil rights and Human rights. We as African Americans, who are unified, have encountered and been victimized with constant hostility work environments, lower pay differentials, preferential treatments, slum name calling, unfair disciplinary write ups and have also had access to many other discriminating factors which have lowered our moral values, humiliated us and disgraced our humanity for mankind. We have been trying to deal with this problem from a casual root instead of an individual effect, but we are exhausted, however we stand collectively as a whole in numbers and numbers we must stand. We have been discriminated against by our employer, The Home Depot, based on our skin color, race, gender, process of intimidation and sex not to mention our nationality. We are rudely dehumanized as African Americans on a daily basis, by The Home Depot, and are intimidated by threats of termination of our positions, from our management team, with constant reminders to end our careers daily. With so many allegations against this company (The Home Depot) we as African Americans have no choice but to reach out to a national organization for help with having no doubt that this organization would respond in a matter which benefit’s the ethnic group surrounding these allegations (African Americans). Thus this cry for help is not a sympathy one, African Americans are willing to do whatever it takes to get this notice out to any organization that may help us resolve and conclude this injustice and unfair treatment. “Make no mistake we are moving forward collectively with non-violent emphasis, but are prepared to put pressure where it hurts.” The Home Depot is giving Caucasian workers two to three times more pay than African American workers rather they are salaried managers or associates, denying them of pay raises without just cause, and not accessing African Americans to the same privileges as Caucasian workers. The Home Depot does not promote African Americans to higher paid corporate positions although African Americans have more seniority, merit, and supervisory experience. Let’s just say that “they have one show piece token (African American) for every store but not every district.“ The Home Depot is also hiring Caucasian workers, coming in the door, at higher wages, setting them up for faster promotio
