Good points, Kami.
Have a plan, and stick to it. But, keep it flexible enough when a crisis hits, or market conditions change. I think we in PR are often too reactionary.

Yes, we are, but usually because we DON'T have a plan (ha-ha). However, you are right about needing to keep it flexible, I think when we finally take time to make a plan we want to stick to it, by golly. Balance isn't easy. Does anyone else have any examples of ways they keep their plans flexible?

I can really relate to this blog. I have worked in the restaurant business for 3 years. The most important thing I have learned is to be accountable. Following the established, regimented schedule is paramount. Appetizers go out to tables in 6 minutes, salads in 2, and so on makes me realize the importance of team work. The process fails if one person fails. The kitchen can make the salads in 2 minutes, but if a server does not take them to the table within that time, the process fails. Regulars are a tough subject. When you look at your table and see a regular you either smile because they're pleasant and tip well or start complaining because they're picky and rude. It will be the same with clients in public relations. Some will be pleasant to deal with, some a little more difficult, but that is the nature of the business.

I loved your parallel in your post. I am a student at Auburn University and I am majoring in public relations. I particularly enjoyed what you said about knowing your audience. I am a sudent recruiter for the university and I give tours to potential students. If there is anything that I have learned, it is that knowing your audience is key. I have learned how to alter my tour depending on the different groups of people and their personalities. It's amazing how much you can learn about public relations just by living everyday life.

Considering that public relations is about relationships it isn't surprising. Becoming aware of the daily learning is the key to capturing it.
