Have you thought about protecting your carpets? We had a barbecue last year which was interrupted by the odd shower. The folowing day when we sobered up we found sludge over all the carpets. It was made worse by us not having a downstairs loo! Fortunately we hired a carpet cleaner and the dirt all came off, the carpets weren't that new anyway.
All our friends had wiped their feet, but I think the mats just couldn't take the strain!
