Same thing happened to us in Curry and Dixons when we went camera shopping. Before you ask, we had vouchers for said chains!
curry's, dixons, PC world, all these mega shops are the same. My son in law to be enjoys going into pc world and asking questions, because they employ people who don't know the answers.
Employees have to ask those browsing if they want help every 3 seconds and ignore people who want to buy things. This is because the only items they actually stock are the ones on display and they can't sell htose. Its like an electrical museum/place to keep some people off the street.

I think it was Comet where I had to almost grab a passing staff member by the scruff of the neck to get him to sell me a TV...
We have the same experience in such places. It's almost as though they don't want to sell you stuff. On occasions we have actually walked out and taken our custom elsewhere.

If you know someone who's regularly flying outside Britain for work, or if you, or someone you know, is about to go on holiday, give them the spec, and see if they can find what you want in duty free. We got our digital camera at Gatwick when we went to Austria, earlier in the year. You might only save £20/£30 odd quid on the camera, but the memory cards (IIRC) were dirt cheap, and the service was excellent.. ie. plenty of staff who knew what they were on about.
