Hey,
I like your blog, and it's good to see you settling down in Norway. I'm a Norwegian myself, but have been living in Holland since I turned 19 (am 27 now), so you probably know your way around here better than I do as an adult.
Please excuse my brutality, but I want to ask you for a little help.
Since 2 years I'm in a relationship with a male specimen of the Alabamian kind. We've been doing the '3 months here - a month or two apart - 3 months there'-thing for a long time now, and it's time to move on.
Considering both our circumstances, I believe we have the best chance for a good life in Norway. But if I even mention it, he gets angry and upset. He has a few concerns, and I was wondering if you, as an American in Norway, would mind telling me how you have experienced these things. Considering you're a blogger, I hope you'll maybe take the time to, truthfully, let us know if he's right or not.
His foremost concerns are:
- English speakers, or even people with foreign names, can not get a proper job in Norway (janitor, dishwasher or garbage man are your options).
- Norwegians don't speak English.
- Norwegians are cold, rude, mean etc.
- Norwegian is an impossible language to learn.
- As a non-Norwegian speaker, you can't get around on your own.
- Oslo has such a high crime rate, it's a dangerous city to live in.
His negativity might be partially my fault, since most the time he spent in Norway was in November on a small island on the west coast.
If you can find the time, please e-mail me your thoughts on the matter. I'll truely appreciate it!
Thank you so much!
With kind regards,
Vibeke
