If Richard enlisted the teeming vermin, they would quickly demand darkness to scuttle within.
Richard would be unable to see, and therefore would be unable to make pamphlets. In the darkness of light and the darkness of his mind he would no doubt soon lay down and die, whereupon the beetles would consume his flaccid flesh.

Since Richard is seemingly too thick to understand the advantages of enlisting the beetles in his "silly groupuscule", perhaps said beetles could be enlisted in an effort to eradicate the ants that as of late have infested HQ, and save the Central Committee's cheese-flavored snacks?

It is essential to avoid the trap of thinking 'an enemy of my enemy is my friend'. Beetles form the most unreliable of allies. We must fight the kittens alone! (And the ants). Courage!

Huh, I had no idea that the Beetles were so unreliable. And I suppose they would be pretty much useless againts kittens and pudding anyway. Thanks for the insight, comrade!
