I may not be popular for saying this but I think John is being irresponsible with his "I've got a secret" posts.

Let me count the ways...

1. It builds an expectation in his audience that he may not be able to fulfill. At this point, unless the secret leads to the downfall of the house of Bush, a significant number of people are going to be disappointed.

2. It provides a greater opportunity for his enemies to lay the groundwork for refuting his story (he's apparently already clued Gannon/Guckert into the secret). Woodstein didn't inform Mitchel of their story on the CRP slush fund until minutes before the story went to press. By playing it the way he has, John is giving Gannon/Guckert and whoever he is allied with plenty of time to develop a counter-response.

3. It strings along his most loyal fans (again, he's already told Gannon/Guckert, so he's told the enemy something that he isn't willing to tell his friends). Reading the comments to the hint posts I am reminded of a bunch of puppies yipping and leaping at a piece of meat held aloft by their master. Is that really the kind of humiliating position you want your fans to be in John?

4. It diverts the energies of thousands of people in the blogosphere into trying to figure out what Avarosis' secret is instead of trying to figure out what Gannon/Guckert's secret is. Several valuable investigative man hours have been wasted by followers of this story looking up pictures of cartoon bulldogs on google.

5. It artificially inflates his audience in the exact same way as the evening news teasers. Is that the kind of company you want to keep John?

John, please, if you have something important to say then say it. If you aren't ready to say it, then just keep quiet about it until you are.

(And yes, I still will feel this way even after the secret is revealed and it turns out to be the thing that leads to the fall of the house of Bush.)

And later there was blackmail and now, I have learned from the inside, this joker has sold the lists to: Iranians( through his partner’s Arab connections) and a gay group in DC. Sold the lists twice and got twice the money. I have seen a partial list and it reads like the DC social register, believe me! This enterprising young man is very liable to end up at the bottom of the Potomac River just like ex-CIA chief Bill Colby who was terminated by his former employees because he just couldn’t keep his mouth shut about certain things.

(2) John is triple-fact-checking every item in the story;

Everyone, including a lot of bloggers I really enjoy, keep making a point of saying that letting a poorly-qualifed political operative who was also a prostitute into the press room is worse, theoretically, than letting a poorly-qualifed political operative who was not a prostitute into the press room. How is it any worse? The only thing I can think of is if he was given classified info, he may've been more susceptible to blackmail about his personal life - but that's a rationale that's been used to fuck with homosexuals in general for years. It definitely makes me ill-at-ease.

Clinton didn't lie under oath regarding Monica - that's why he wasn't prosecuted for perjury. He was assigned a definition of sexual relations, that he was legally required to abide by, and curiously, that definition did not include receiving oral sex - although it did include performing oral sex. Strange. Clinton even gave them a head's up, which, had he been his own client, he would have gone ballistic over it. Remember when he says something to the effect of, "gentleman, I have read your definition very carefully" - that omission in the definition is what he's referring to. Since the definition was specified, he was legally obligated to answer the question using it. That is why he didn't commit perjury.

And I think there is a legitimate, albeit separate, story about the degree to which conservatives make their bread and butter scaring people about the grand homosexual menace while privately condoning, supporting, or indulging in the stuff they denounce (and for the record, I publicly condone and support homosexuality). But the reality is that there's no great victory in just taking down Gannon or Talon News. They're baby shrimp. On the 2000 campaign trail, he sold his success as a "tax-cutting person" by hailing cuts he passed in Texas while governor. But Bush did not tell the full story of his 1997 tax plan. His proposal called for cutting property taxes. But what he didn't mention is that it also included an attempt to boost the sales tax and to implement a new business tax. Nor did he note that his full package had not been accepted by the state legislature. Instead, the lawmakers passed a $1 billion reduction in property taxes. And these tax cuts turned out to be a sham. After they kicked in, school districts across the state boosted local tax rates to compensate for the loss of revenue. A 1999 Dallas Morning News analysis found that "many [taxpayers] are still paying as much as they did in 1997, or more." Republican Lieutenant Governor Rick Perry called the cuts "rather illusory."

I'm in favor of an Iranian style theocracy here in America where Christian versions of mullahs (Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, etc.) declare all law by way of religious edict (a Christian version of a fatwaa, if you will).

I've always detested rule by the people, as do most religious conservatives in my party (most of the leadership). I wholeheartedly agree with Jerry Falwell that government should be run only by Christians, and all the Jews currently infesting government offices should be purged.

The media will never go after the Gannon story to any real degree no matter what this story is. I know of at least one newspaper in South Dakota that Gannon attacked -- sometimes personally -- for two years. The staff investigated who he was, found out he was basically a Republican plant and NEVER WROTE ANYTHING ABOUT IT. They knew about him since 2003 and deliberately kept it covered up, even though he called them out directly. Now you expect the rest of the MSM to dig deeper?
