The Lies of Gannongate
An ADVOCATE EDITORIAL

Thus far, the only truth being told in the Gannongate scandal is that being offered up by the progressive internet media.

Current White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan, and former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer, can't seem to get their stories straight on precisely when, or how, or why, the White House became suspicious of the "non-journalist journalist" Jeff Gannon--and when, or how, or why Gannon got a coveted White House press pass.

First McClellan told the press Gannon was admitted to the White House as a "Talon News" reporter, and there was never any doubt as to his legitimacy in that role.

Then we were told that, in fact, he was admitted as a correspondent for a patently-partisan non-journalistic enterprise, GOPAUSA.com.

Next Ari Fleischer disclosed that the White had become suspicious of Gannon early on--and checked out his employer, Talon News, to determine whether it was a legitimate news operation. That "checking out" involved nothing more than a phone call between Fleischer and Republican activist Bobby Eberle, to hear Fleischer tell it.

Not so, said McClellan.

In fact, the check involved a thorough review of Gannon's employer--which, says McClellan, was not Talon News at the time, but GOPUSA.com.

McClellan said he didn't know Gannon; now we find out that Gannon sent McClellan a card when the White House Press Secretary got married--and was given a coveted invite to the White House's exclusive Christmas Party, an event which, according to several White House correspondents, signifies that the White House believes a journalist is in good standing with the Washington establishment. More recent revelations suggest that the "degrees of separation" between Jeff Gannon ("James Guckert") and Karl Rove ("Minister of Evil") is precisely "one": Morton C. Blackwell, Rove's mentor and Gannon's teacher at the conservative quack-factory The Leadership Institute.

We were told by McClellan, on Bush's behalf, that Bush called on Gannon/Guckert randomly at a rare presidential press conference on January 26th, 2005.

Nobody--not in the establishment press, not in the internet media--believes this. White House press conferences are without question, as a matter of course, scripted right down to who gets to ask the President a question (as well as, you know, who gets to be in the room--within ten feet of a sitting President--in the first place).

[On the video of the press conference, you can see the President briefly grimace with nervousness when he asks "journalist" Gannon/Guckert a question].

We were likewise told by McClellan, on Bush's behalf, that the President has never met and doesn't know Bobby Eberle, the founder of GOPUSA.com, the creator of "Talon News," and--nominally, at least--Gannon/Guckert's "editor." That denial raised some eyebrows, as wel

If the White House press office recognized "Gannon" as a reporter to the degree that Fleischer actually called his "editor," then why the ongoing need for daily passes? Why didn't the White House give him a hard pass, given that hard passes are designed for Washington-residing members of the working press and daily passes are designed for short-term use by out-of-town visitors?

lulu: Here's what I've been able to dig on the relation between Bruce and Bobby.

This March 24, 2004 letter from Bruce Eberle (on the occasion of millionsofamericans and gopusa merging) states: 'Bobby Eberle (of what you might call the "Texas branch" of the Eberle clan) founded www.gopusa.com several years ago.'

There's also this text from rawstory yesterday:

Bobby and Bruce’s “relations” are nebulous–they have been reported not to be blood relatives by a conservative website, though Bruce himself says they are members of the same “clan.” Bobby works out of Texas; Bruce’s firm is based in Virginia.

Clarification: Some have noted that Bobby and Bruce are not close relatives, an assertion this article never alleged. Bobby and Bruce have not commented on their relations, though they did press the Houston Chronicle, which incorrectly reported that they were brothers. Human Events, a conservative website which prints articles from Bobby’s firm, says they are not blood relatives; Bruce himself says that Bobby is a member of the Texas Eberle “clan.”

The Houston Chronicle's story refers to them as brothers, apparently a common mistake. I seem to have read somewhere that Bruce actually does have a brother named Robert, but he's not the same person as the gopusa founder. There are also more than one "Richard Powell"s in this saga.

This study traces elite interlocks between the economic, political, and civil sectors of the United States in the late 1990s. We assess integration and fragmentation through analyzing patterns of overlap and interaction among influential organizations and leaders in these sectors. Network analyses are conducted with UCINET 5 on the Elite Directors Database, a new data set composed of the directors/trustees for the largest organizations in the business and nonprofit sectors in addition to individuals holding positions on federal advisory committees. The complete data set contains individuals holding 3,976 seats from 100 businesses, 109 nonprofit organizations, and 98 government committees. The network structure reveals substantial linkages between organizations and elites within and across the three sectors. Major corporations and their directors are the best integrated in the intersectoral networks. In spite of the tremendous growth of the nonprofit sector, nonprofit organization linkages fail to offer compelling evidence of elite pluralism in the United States.

The NYT today reported Eberle as saying he DIDN'T PAY Guckert. Guckert was a "volunteer reporter" who was wholly unsupervised, if you believe Eberle.

So, how what did Guckert really do for a living? John's diligent reporting gives the best clue, doesn't it?

Not only was Guckert operating fraudulently under an alias to pass off plagiarized work as his own to post it on a site that was not a publication, regular or otherwise, but also the fact is that he NEVER has been employed as a journalist by anyone, not anyone on the record, anyway.

Proud Freeper Bill, In your complete bafflement you fail to get the major points of this story. Gannon/Guckert was privy to (or so he so stated) a document releasing CIA agent Valerie Plames name. He also is quote by a news producer as being a major source of breaking White House information one being the term "shock and awe" many hours before that term was ever used to the general public.

You see Bill we are talking crimes of a major magnitude that make what Nixon did seem as kids play.

First off, it's hysterical that this site is now getting gay advertisements. It's almost as if the advertisers know it's become a "gay" story and think that "gay" people will be the only ones interested in it.

I posted links to people who study networks because this type of stuff can rapidly get enormously complicated. Each addional person in a network increases the potential connections among them factorially. So, with just 2 or 3 boards of directors, maybe 25 people, removing duplicate names, you're looking at 25! potential relationships. That's why mapping it all and computing can become extremely helpful; especially in finding unexpected links.

Among all the people working for W in the White House, working with/for Talon and Eberle, doing this can help discover someone who could really help us find out what happened.

If you read Ari Fleisher's comments in Editor and Publisher, he stopped calling on Gannon when he thought GOPUSA was a party organ.

Then supposedly he had assurances they were independent. Now there is not only connection to Karl Rove but Julie Cram who is on the list was the Deputy Director of the Bush campaign in charge of surrogate media.

As far as the day pass, ask the Augusta Free Press in Maine who went through a two week struggle to get their pass for a one shot only deal covering a Special Olympics event at the White House.

Talon never exactly hid the fact that it was an ideological organ, and some guy got a day pass, which you think is a big deal. Also because he was a gay prostitute, which you all keep asserting that the White House knew, or the White hOuse didn't know, but should have known.

Some facts, Bill.

1. Guckert got his White House pass before Talon existed. This proves that he was admitted not as a "journalist" but as a political operative. But he was treated as a journalist, which means the White House has been busted as having run a propanda operation.

2. Guckert got a day pass because he wasn't a journalist. To get a hard pass he'd have needed a congressional press pass but they wouldn't give him one. Once Fleisher called Guckert's "editor" and satisfied himself that Guckert was a journalist, then he should have told Guckert to apply for a hard pass.

Why didn't he do that? One possibility is that he knew Guckert wasn't a journalist and could never qualify for a congressional pass and therefore he couldn't be issued a hard pass without raising eyebrows. Or maybe he knew that Guckert wouldn't pass the background check that's required to issue a hard pass.

Or maybe it was both. I think this will soon be known, because now the MSM is on it and they're going to be asking very specific questions about who knew what about Guckert, when they knew it and why he was allowed to gain entrance to the White House by means of a series of day passes that are designed for short-term use by out-of-town journalists.

We're also learning that even a day pass isn't as easy to get as Fleischer and McClellan have implied. This is all gone to come out one way or the other. If the White House had a brain in its collective head they'd 'fess up to the propaganda operation. And if there [i]was[/i] a boyfriend on the inside they'd better come clean with that one, too, because it won't be secret for long.

Regarding the internal CIA memo, JJGG has both denied that he has seen the memo, and has made boasts strongly implying that he has. One of the more damning quotes (from a Free Republicpost, no less) is:

"I will tell you that the information did not come from inside the administration," Gannon told Talon News. "For something that is supposed to be classified, it seems that this document is easily accessible."

JJGG passes up an excellent opportunity to cite the WSJ story as the source of his info. It's possible that JJGG is merely trying to enhance his "man of mystery" image, but an equally plausible interpretation is that he did indeed get special access.

And please, for someone professing an interest in rational dialogue, your invocation of "mental illness" is rather unseemly. Are you by chance familiar with the phenomenon of "projection?"

Very true XXX. I would just add that Rather's documents were probably forged, but it was a red herring to take the heat off of genuine investigation about Chimpy's AWOL war days. And it worked.

The fact that Bush was AWOL or that he lost the 2000 election, those facts arent even debatable outside the borders of the USA, its pretty much common factual knowledge and understanding in Canada, Australia, France, England, Iraq, everywhere. Its odd to even see it debated on American TV because its just common knowledge everywhere else.

The spec proc can only investigate crimes. Nobody knows for certain who committed a crime, but those under investigation give us a pretty good idea.

It illustrates the far superior success of right-wing bloggers over lefties in getting mainstream media to jump on news

Those inclined to accept right-wing mythology about the "left-wing mainstream media" should consider for a moment the sensational story of fake White House reporter "Jeff Gannon."

Never heard of him? That's not surprising. Mainstream news outlets have scarcely touched it. Yet it's been raging for weeks on left-leaning Web sites, which so far have been unable to elevate the story beyond the blogosphere.

Bloggers on the right, by comparison, have enjoyed spectacular success getting the supposedly leftist media to heed and advance their journalistic agenda. This creates a fertile new issue for industry researchers: Why is it that Internet bloggers on the left, compared with those on the right, have so much less demonstrable influence on mainstream journalism?

The "Jeff Gannon" story is a case in point. Try to imagine this scenario: John Kerry wins the presidency and appoints a press secretary who grants a White House press pass to a fake reporter with a fake name representing a fake news outlet. And what if this "Jeff Gannon," whose real name is James Guckert, gets called upon daily to lob softball questions at White House briefings?

And what if it turns up that Gannon/Guckert has an eyebrow-raising connection to the investigation of the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame?

And what if Gannon/Guckert was involved in setting up Web sites promoting homosexual prostitution? And what if racy nude photos of him start flooding the Internet?

The only thing imaginary about this scenario was the part about Kerry being president. Had it been Kerry whose aide allowed Gannon/Guckert such access to the president, just think of the furor. Conservative Web jockeys, in tandem with talk-radio shouters, would have created a frenzy thrusting the sordid story onto front pages across the land. At the very least, President Kerry's press secretary would be out of a job.

Bloggers on the left are no less bullies than those on the right. But it's possible that mainstream U.S. news organizations resent the liberal-bias tag so much that they're more susceptible to pressure from the right.

Whatever the case, the "Jeff Gannon" story is legitimate: On Jan. 26, at a time of heightened national security, a phony reporter with a pseudonym and ties to the Republican Party got to sit just a few feet from the president at a nationally televised news conference and was called upon -- ahead of dozens of actual reporters -- to ask an inanely sympathetic question.

I do agree that the "Bush Tapes" story is a good one and very interesting indeed. It discusses the marijuana issue, the cocaine issue, the gay issue (and neither Bush or Cheney hate gays, they just pretend to so the bible-thumper-bigots will support them.)

But somehow I don't think Rove is behind it. I actually think that the "Bush Tapes" story is going to enflame the bible-thumping-nuts more than anything else... and I don't think that's something Rove would want to do right now, he needs them for a couple more years.

I think the "Bush Tapes" story is being released by Mr Wead because he's trying to sell more copies of his book. That's all.

Bill: thanks for that last response. I actually agree with you wholeheartedly about the need for extreme care in distinguishing facts from interpretation from speculation.

To others: as much as you may disagree with Bill's ideology, he could play a valuable role offering his constructive criticism, pointing out the weaknesses in our arguments and reporting.

The left blogosphere would have benefitted greatly from similar caution in analyzing the memos Bruce Burkett obtained from "Lucy Ramirez". Just about everybody, left and right, mainstream and fringe, managed to get basic information wrong about fonts, kerning, typewriter makes, and so on.

As quoted on one of the PropaGannon threads, "if your mother tells you she loves you, check it out!"

QUESTION:

Didnt the Whitehouse say in response to Gannongate a couple days ago that they didnt even know Bobby Eberle or that they had never met him? Or that they knew "of" him but had never met him? And I think they meant Bush or Rove, not sure which. That rings a bell somehow but Im not sure.

As for being careful, we've been very careful. We havent done a thing wrong yet and everything that we've put out as news has been factual and honest. We can debate and discuss leads in here, thats different than posting them on blogs as truth.

Back to the Plame topic. I have heard the "six journalists" line before. What I have not heard is anyone working for Patrick Fitzgerald talk to the press about this. I'd think by now that someone would have leaked some information on the six by now.

The reason why I think Cooper and Miller are named is because they're the only ones that may have committed a crime. In other words, they could be the only two of the "six" that were aware she was an UC agent. The four others, of which I assume includes Novak, were not aware of the uc agent status.

Now, the investigation is still ongoing and experts on special prosecutors have written that the appointment of Fitzgerald was the nail in the coffin for a long, thorough investigation. So I don't have any hopes that we will know any other names unless someone on the inside starts talking to the press.

Since we don't know anything about J/J's early life, what's the possibility that he could have been part of the huge sex/gay/pedophile scandal that rocked the Reagan/Bush White House in the late 80's? The military was heavily involved and that aspect of the scandal was eventually covered up by a high-ranking Naval officer. There were scores of boys, some just over the age of consent and some several years under the age of consent, involved.
