The anti-war left lives in an alternate universe which bears little resemblance to the world the rest of us live in. An anti-war leftist's brain works like this: Since Israel has contingency plans on how to deal with Hezbollah, it is a certainty that Israel deliberately provoked the current conflict in order to have an excuse to destroy Hezbollah. It is very, very hard to deal with anti-war leftists because of this. We get strange events like this: the anti-war left says President Bush lied when he stated that Saddam attempted to obtain uranium in Niger - but President Bush never said that Saddam attempted to obtain uranium in Niger...doesn't matter to the anti-war leftist: President Bush, as leader of the Real Enemy, simply must be a liar and that means that when he stated that Saddam was attempting to obtain uranium in Africa, he must have meant Niger because the anti-war left feels certain that this is the one place Saddam didn't attempt to obtain uranium. To boil this down, once an anti-war leftist stakes out a position, then it must forever be correct - no subsequent facts will in any way, shape or form alter the original anti-war left position. At any rate, any contravening evidence is likely manufactured by the Real Enemy to cover up the truth.

Bush was on vacation prior to 9/11. Bush was on vacation during Hurricane Katrina. Bush is on vacation during the nation's first red alert. Despite repeated warnings prior to 9/11, what did Bush do to secure the nation? Nothing. Despite repeated warnings that Hurricane Katrina would be a disaster, what did Bush do? Nothing. Prior to the British bomb plot, what did Bush do to enhance security? Nothing.
Didn't Bush say not to long ago that the al Qaeda threat had been significantly reduced and that Bin Laden was no longer important? Didn't Bush say that democracies don't produce terrorists, and that was one of the reasons we were "democratizing" Iraq? Only the British plot was hatched by British in a democracy. And Cheney alleges that al Qaeda will be emboldened by a democratic election in Connecticut. Oh well, I guess we shouldn't vote this November either, because they might embolden al Qaeda. Oh, and hasn't Bush repeatedly argued that manly men don't do police work, they preemptively bomb nations instead. But it was old-fashioned girly man police work and international cooperation that nabbed these terrorists. Now Bush is claiming that GWOT is GWIF [the global war on Islamic fascists]. He's basically calling Muslims fascists and saying they're the enemy. Yes, the Bush administration has just confirmed the fears of Muslims and Arabs all over the world that the war on terror is really a Crusade.
And the GOP has the NERVE to say that Democrats are soft on security!

Rep. Charles Rangel [(D-Harlem)], dean of the city's congressional delegation, was right when he said that Vice President Cheney is a "sick man" who "grunts a lot."
"He's a sick man, you know," Rangel said of Cheney, prompting host Davidson Golden to point out that the vice president suffers from heart disease. Rangel retorted, "He's got heart disease, but the disease is not restricted just to that part of his body. He grunts a lot, so you never really know what he's thinking." Asked whether he thinks Cheney is healthy enough to do the job, Rangel said, "Why do you think people are spending so much time praying for President Bush's health?

"The British Government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quanitities of uranium from Africa."
Both gramatically and factually incorrect. Maybe Bush wasn't a liar, only he knows that for sure. But he was wrong. Bush didn't say Niger, but it was Niger. The Butler Report specifically says that this intelligence was based on a trip from Iraqi officials to Niger in 1999. Whether they were there to get uranium or not, that's not the point because they didn't get any. Bush was still wrong, and it was Niger, and you are wrong sir.

The PRO-WAR right lives in an alternate universe which bears little resemblance to the world the rest of us live in. For example, Iraq is a threat and could have nuked us or sent unarmed drones to New York City within 45 minutes! North Korea isn't a threat but Iraq was. We would be welcomed with flowers and Iraqi candy by joyful "liberated" Iraqis and the insurgency was in its last throes about a year ago. Osama is no longer a threat but Saddam must have been the secret mastermind behind the 9-11 attacks. The Pro-war winger's brain works like this: Paint a rosy picture of progress in Iraq and then use it to justify staying the course. It is very, very hard to deal with pro-war neo-cons because of this. We get strange events like this: the pro-war winger says that the people of Iran would welcome us with grateful smiles, flowers, and kisses if we invade Iran even though it has been proven to be false in Iraq. The pro-war winger says that President Bush would never lie his country into war and that intelligence failed him. To boil this down, once an PRO-WAR winger stakes out a position, then it must forever be correct - no subsequent facts will in any way, shape or form alter the original pro-war chickenhawk position. It doesn't matter that the WMD "found" in Iraq were degraded chemical munitions dating from before 1991. It doesn't matter that our soldiers are dying over there. At any rate, any contravening evidence is likely manufactured by the Real Enemy to cover up the truth.

Sorry to be off topic, here’s breaking news:
The American Psychological Association on Friday issued a stinging rebuke of the so-called ex-gay movement following a demonstration by members of several organizations that claim homosexuality is a choice that can be cured….
”For over three decades the consensus of the mental health community has been that homosexuality is not an illness and therefore not in need of a cure," the statement said.
" The APA's concern about the positions espoused by NARTH and so-called conversation therapy is that they are not supported by the science. There is simply no sufficiently scientifically sound evidence that sexual orientation can be changed. Our further concern is that the positions espoused by NARTH and Focus on the Family create an environment in which prejudice and discrimination can flourish."

Some disheartening Lamont news:
The final numbers from Rasmussen, after surveying 550 "likely voters on August 9 & 10 (i.e. post-primary):
Lieberman 46%
Lamont 41%
Schlessinger 6%
That's more than the 3% spread they teased. Other highlights:
Very unfavorable: 18% Lieberman vs. 23% Lamont
Very favorable: 31% Lieberman vs. 19% Lamont
(clip)
Voters trust Lieberman over Lamont on the "War on Terror" 55% to 31%.
Most important issues are theconomy (37%), Iraq (23%), and national security (16%).
They claim a MOE of + or - 4% with a 95% level of certainty.
All in all, not too heartening for the Lamont camp and, small sample excuses, aside a good reason for all those committed to change to get busy and stay busy.

JOHN,
Our bitchy friend Michelle Malkin links to the article about two Georgian (Republic of Georgia) men detained by authorities in PA for buying hundreds of cell phones. It is clear that it has nothing to do with terrorism, main reason for buying cell phones in bulks is a business. But of course, our friends-xenophobes are happy to take advantage of the story - arrested have 'weird' names (which to most of Americans would probably sound like Muslim names) and 'suspicios' face. yet, one detail: there are no Muslims in Republic of Georgia, all Georgians are ORTHODOX CHRISTIANs, like Greeks, so there is no way they are involved in terror plot of any kind. But why would michelle care...

Sir, I'm going to have to take this bottle of water away from you since it might be a liquid explosive, and I'm going to have to mix it with all of these other bottles of possibly liquid explosive, and I'm going to have to dump them all in this trash can... together. Nevermind that the plot specifically mentions mixing chemicals and/or nitroglycerin... which explodes if handled too roughly.
The only conclusion you can reach here is that airport security are not looking for terrorists because if they truly believed terrorists were attempting to board planes with liquids they wouldn't be mishandling the liquids in this way.

The Administration knew of the British operation for four days prior. They knew that the Connecticut primary was going to be national news that reflected a growing wave of anti-GOP sentiment. So, forearmed with this national security knowledge, they primed the American “psyche” then linked their primer to an event memory using the emotion of fear. To “prime” is to bridge two unrelated ideas into one schema or cognition memory usually using strong emotions such as fear. The primer was “this proves that the Democratic Party has been taken over by extremists, who will allow America to be attacked by terrorists just like 9/11”. The Administration (and the GOP, is Ken privy to ultra classified info?) did the primer knowing that an event had already happened, that would be an EPISODIC MEMEORY to a majority of Americans. With the primer in place and being repeated in every media outlet, then the election of Ned Lamont, then the “event” to form an episodic memory to link the primer to the event, a negative memory is solidified. This was a large scale brain washing of Americans using national security secrets for political gain. It is, for want of a better word, heinous.

Liarman is doing the same thing. The minute Rove gets involved, the Crayola codes start flashing.
It is no hyperbole to say that these wingnut and media elites hate democracy and democratic movements - they hate them so much they scream their hatred for democracy to anyone who will listen.
They hate "we the people" so much they are willing to make up stories wholly unsupported by even rudimentary evidence.
But democracy still exists in America and elections still happen here. Wingnut hatred is no longer the ideology that gets to govern unchallenged. We've heard the first rumblings in Connecticut. And in November, the rumble is going to be an earthquake no matter how much the political and media elites whine, cry and scream.

This White House is under the assumption that every American will swallow their daily diet of fear and lies without rebuttle.
Bush and Company place a much higher value on protecting a narrow-minded idology then they do our very democracy.
Cheney has repeatedly lied to the American people about the direction and nature of our involvement in Iraq.
Iraq is a Republican/Neo-con disaster that future generations of Americans will have to pay for long after these miserable bastards are gone.
Bush is clueless - he can't talk unless he is at scripted event.
Cheney will lie with fearce determination.
Rumsfiled is crazier than an outhouse rat.
And Condi is worthless.
Meanwhile, with all these lies and distortions coming from this bunch it is rare that the American media exposes them for or their failures.
Cheney made his comments because he has total contempt for the truth! Neither he nor Bush himself has EVER had to face accountability for their lies and failures.
Republicans know how to avoid the truth, smear opponents, and dodge accountability.
Well, I think their days are numbered!

But the Times held back after government officials said the article would compromise their ability to track terrorists. In a statement, Times Executive Editor Bill Keller said government officials convinced the newspaper that the president had the legal authority to order the wiretaps.

And overtime is dangerous to athletes - I can't believe that colleges get away with putting students through a performance duration that they are not trained for. It is about damn time the newspapers in this country start acting responsible and reporting the news to the American people.
No more igonoring people like Cheney and Rove and Bush. When they do something wrong it needs to be reported and Cheney was damn wrong for still trying to use the political tactics of past years to scare the American people.

I tend to believe that the neocon agenda has been successful beyond their wildest dreams. They are not particularly interested in "democracy" or "freedom." They are interested in regional destabilization and militaristic/corporate hegemony. To achieve these ends, they needed to consolidate internal power and control. This 30 y/o neocon movement has succesfully taken over American policy, foreign and domestic, and provided massive profits to the participants especially over the last 5 years.

Don't fret people/ Being called "etremist" is not going to play well with Joe and Betty Q. Citizen. Folks who oppose this radically extreme right administration's policies are not radical or extremist, they are average people who share in common with approximately 80% of the world's population a desire for betterment of their lives. They want education, housing, health care, employment that is worthwhile and opportunities for achievement. Most people are opposed to war, murder, occupation and oppression and do not eagerly embrace it as do the administration and their supporters.
Regular people oppose unbridled corporate power and the rigged market system of capitalism.
In an ever failing effort to establish these fringe policies as the "norm" the adminsitration has attempted to move the center ever rightward, so people who hold the views described above can be portrayed as "extreme." The corporate marketing and advertising propaganda machine encourages this view by describing anyone who is "anti war" as a "radical."
Let's see how Joe and Betty Average like being called "radicals" My bet is this goes over like a pregnant polevaulter.

John, you've been doing a great job following this story. Keep it up. Maybe we can finally get the groundswell of ridicule going we need against this gang. The Philly Daily News editorial is probably a leading indicator that they overreached this time.
Everybody know by now the risk was out there for a dozen years, if it still really was a risk. So why now?
Maybe they improvised too fast when too many narratives started heading south: Lieberman defeat, more plummeting in the polls, the bloody chaos in Iraq where we're staying the coures (for how long?), cluster bombs for Israel and the blown ceasefire, you name it. So they pulled the plug on some group that was probably started by a provocateur and riddled with informants anyhow (not a bad strategy, in and of itself, actually -- suck the nutballs into a compromised organization where you can keep track of them).
A possibly useful operation blown for no reason, except partisan political advantage. And hundreds of thousands of women had millions of dollars worth of makeup confiscated. For Republican political advantage. Lotsa questions are gonna be asked. Keep up the pressure. Every bit helps.
Spinning the White House's over-the-top terror exploitation ... Compare and contrast these two different versions of AFP story for yourself.

From US NEWS AND WORLD REPORT
Washington Whispers: GOP voters: like a rock
By Paul Bedard
Posted 8/9/06
Many Democrats may hate the war in Iraq and itch to dump the president, but a new GOP survey shows that Republican base voters stand ready to jam the November polls to return their team to Congress. A three-page-survey memo obtained by Washington Whispers reveals that despite reports of some dissatisfaction with the economy, the war, and President Bush, 81 percent of Republican voters are "almost certain" to vote and an additional 14 percent say they are "very likely." It goes without saying that they'll vote Republican: By a margin of 84 percent to 6 percent, they will pull the GOP toggle switch in the voting booth. And here is something you don't hear very often: 88 percent of Republicans approve of how the prez is handling his job. What's it all mean? Analysts say that GOP voters are ready to dig in and play defense against the charges Democrats are tossing at Republican candidates.
The memo also helps to define what issues work for Republican candidates. The survey--officially tilted "Base Mobilization Survey Finds and Conclusions"--divided the issues into foreign and domestic. On the foreign side, it's all terrorism and war with polling that finds GOP voters back the war, worry about Democratic attacks on the fight against terrorism, and think the Patriot Act, moves to tighten the border, and even telephone surveillance are good things. And their favorite domestic issues aren't a surprise: They are pro-tax cuts, big on cultural values, and worried that Democrats want to put too much bureaucracy in healthcare. Another nonshocker: They don't like the media's war stories, thinking that they are too negative. Some 60 percent of the GOP base expresses "extremely high dissatisfaction" with the coverage of the war.

you would be more effective if you refrained from making comments "personal". While I agree that it would be difficult to rig an obviously lobsided election, I remind you that is PRECISELY what happened in 2004. The election was no closer than Greenland is to Alpha Centauri. But with a complicit media prepared to LIE and tell people how "close" the election is when it's actually a fucking landslide (see 2004 exit polls for example) then we really have to give consideration to how DIEBOLD is ALLOWED to work ... in conjunction with the whoring propagandists in MSM

President Bush Job Approval
August 10, 2006
Photo Courtesy of whitehouse.gov Forty percent (40%) of American adults approve of the way that President Bush is performing his job as President. Fifty-eight percent (58%) disapprove (see comments on comparing Job Approval numbers from different polling firms).
The President earns Approval from 76% of Republicans and just 14% of Democrats (see full month trends and demographic breakdowns).

marblex,
I got personal because I absolutely lose it when anyone hijacks a discussion on politics with the word "Diebold", as if to suggest that nothing we say or do matters, because the GOP has figured out a way to rig every election from here to eternity, and there's absolutely nothing we can do about it, so we might as well fold and give up. I take that VERY personally, because it's not a rational argument, but simply simplistic fearmongering that could just as well be coming from operatives on the right who want to scare us into giving up, as from pantywaists on the left who've already given up. I have little time or use for either.
Yes, of course, election tampering is a known GOP tactic and a key part of their electoral strategy, and we absolutely should be on guard for it and do whatever we can to combat it. (I've read Mark Crispn Miller et al). But that should in no way, shape or form alter our overall strategy for defeating the GOP this fall, which is to contrast their utterly failed, loathsome and divisive policies that have made nearly every American's life worse and more perilous, with our far more sensible, rational, reality-based, proven and unifying policies.
If you want to discuss specifics of this or any other issue, fine. But if you throw out words like Diebold like it's an actual argument, I'm going to get ticked off--and show it.

novemberelection,
I don't care if every idiot Repub (and anyone who's still a loyal Repub who stands behind BushCo at this point is pretty much, by definition, an idiot) does vote for the Repub candidate this fall. Dems will be out in just as high numbers--and their hatred of BushCo (which is obviously well-deserved) is if anything even greater than wingnuts' love of BushCo. And independants, who have long since abandoned BushCo, will be voting heavily pro-Dem.
So do the math. In non-wingnut, non-safe GOP states and districts, it's going to be a long, dark, painful night for Repubs. And barring an "October Suprise" or Diebold-like shennanigans (both of which are to be expected, but the results of which are unknown), Dems are going to score major victories this fall. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just pissing up a flagpole.
kovie |

Kovie:
I assume only you have tried pissing up a flagpole.
As for your rant.
I have done the Math, and it shows the Democrat party canNOT win the House nor Senate if the numbers I am seeing for Republican voters are true.
There are not enough LIKELY voters on your side to change the numbers.
You better find a nice closet to go cry in on election night because you will be sorely mistaken on what you think is going to happen.
And I don;t need your loon conspiracy/Rove/Diebold/October SUrpirse/Steal The Election Again (Which was never true in either election)rantings to make my statement.
All you libs are extrapolating trends you think you see and coming up with a result you like, just like all the Media polls that use more Democrats than Republicans in them.
You are all lying to yourselves.
Thinking you are going to win does not make it so any more than saying you see more yard signs for Kerry than Bush so Bush can't win.

Someday you Democrats will learn.

Oh dear. Yet another rancid turd fragment bursting out of Karl Rove's ass. I'm genuinely sorry that you had to take the short bus to school, but that's not really my problem. If you can't make heads or tails out of a currently 18% point spread between who voters are likely to vote for this fall, your boy's 33% and plunging poll numbers, 60% against the war, and 2/3 of Americans saying that we're on the wrong track--many of them coming from Faux's own polls--and figure out what this is going to mean for all your stuck in the mud elephant buddies this fall, oh boy, are you in for a really rude shock this November.
You can keep trying to convince yourself and others that the world really is quite flat, but it's not working over here in the reality-based part of the universe. Now tell your buddy Karl that he really needs to cut down on that prune juice he's been sucking down like crazy. Or to wear some diapers. Please. It's just not polite. 64 percent of Americans still believe that Saddam Hussein had strong links to al Qaeda. That can't be right, surely! This is shameful, it not only displays ignorance but shows that an overwhelming lack of curiosity in world current affairs is rife in the worlds only super-power. Are they putting something in the water over there?
Great article by the way, about bloody time the MSM in America grew a pair.

Kip,
I think the figure's closer to a bit over 50% or so, and the belief is that Iraq possessed WMD before the war. But maybe you're looking at a different poll.
In any case, the fact that either of these results is in the double digits (or at least higher than Bush and the GOP's current poll numbers) does not speak well about the mindset, knowledge base and curiosity level of the average American.
And it certainly presents a serious challenge to Dems who are looking to extend the gains they're going to make this year beyond an election cycle or two. An electorate that is this clueless and apathetic is going to be hard for Dems to hold onto once they're forgotten how awful the Bush years were. A dumb electorate is the GOP's best friend.
All the more reason for Dems to push hard for education reform, stronger separation between church and state, re-implementation of the Fairness Doctrine, public election financing, and an end to all corporate election funding. The smarter and better informed the electorate, the fairer and more professional the media, and the less influence corporations have on elections, the better for Dems.
Well, progressive Dems at least.

When we had a fire drill in school, the principal was there, watching over his charges.
When a ship at sea is in trouble, the captain is there, watching over his charges. If in his quarters, he will find his way to the bridge.
When I was an active duty Marine (Reagan years) and our Okinawa base was on alert due to some Soviet war game or other, the base CO was there, watching over his charges. If in his quarters, he would find his way to his HQ.
And when our nation was attacked on 9/11, brutalized by nature in the form of Katrina (and no small amount of human blunder), and again threatened this week, our 'Commander-in-Chief' was... on vacation. And there he'll stay.
Western White House, my ass. Real cowboys ride horses, not $2000 mountain bikes. Real commanders-in-chief command - from the Oval Office. Not part time in between brush-clearing sessions
I can't even discuss the fact that the Administration knew about this and used it to reinforce their fear tactics. Not without devolving into vulgarity, anyway. Rude Pundit, anyone?

graymatter, you give excellent examples of what leadership is all about. I find it odd that there is a plethora of books out there on "leadership" and 99% of them speak of the things you've outlined, and I am QUITE certain that these books are used in the finest of Business Schools in the land-- i.e. Harvard, Yale (in fact, some of them are written by graduates of those schools).
It seems to me that bush would have learned SOMETHING about leadership in school, but then I remember that he is a dunce, the class idiot who does not read and has never LEAD anything in his life-- that's why he is a miserable failure at everything he has touched both in the corporate world and public service. That is why he is the STOOGE and not the Presdident.

Andover cheerleader makes "good".
Figures.
Cause the cheerleaders don't actually play the game - they cheer from the sidelines.
And for that matter, they don't even write the cheers. They just yell what they're told to, over and over and over..
We've got terror, yes we do!
We've got terror, how 'bout YOU?

"WASHINGTON - While the British terror suspects were hatching their plot, the Bush administration was quietly seeking permission to divert $6 million that was supposed to be spent this year developing new homeland explosives detection technology. [...]
The department failed to spend $200 million in research and development money from past years, forcing lawmakers to rescind the money this summer.
The administration also was slow to start testing a new liquid explosives detector that the Japanese government provided to the United States earlier this year. [...]
Japan has been using the liquid explosive detectors in its Narita International Airport in Tokyo and demonstrated the technology to U.S. officials at a conference in January, the Japanese Embassy in Washington said. [...]
For more than four years, officials inside Homeland Security also have debated whether to deploy smaller trace explosive detectors — already in most American airports — to foreign airports to help stop any bomb chemicals or devices from making it onto U.S.-destined flights.
A 2002 Homeland report recommended "immediate deployment" of the trace units to key European airports, highlighting their low cost, $40,000 per unit, and their detection capabilities. The report said one such unit was able, 25 days later, to detect explosives residue inside the airplane where convicted shoe bomber Richard Reid was foiled in his attack in December 2001.
A 2005 report to Congress similarly urged that the trace detectors be used more aggressively, and strongly warned the continuing failure to distribute such detectors to foreign airports "may be an invitation to terrorist to ply their trade, using techniques that they have already used on a number of occasions."
Tony Fainberg, who formerly oversaw Homeland Security's explosive and radiation detection research with the national labs, said he strongly urged deployment of the detectors overseas but was rebuffed.
"It is not that expensive," said Fainberg, who retired recently. "There was no resistance from any country that I was aware of, and yet we didn't deploy it." [...]
The administration's most recent budget request also mystified lawmakers. It asked to take $6 million from Homeland S&T's 2006 budget that was supposed to be used to develop explosives detection technology and instead divert it to cover a budget shortfall in the Federal Protective Service, which provides security around government buildings."

Ok,Ok. Try this.
Nature is universal. That is a fact.
Since the dawn of time it has been survival of the fittest. Looking back at all of the great civilizations in the past, ( I am no historian, I'm just taking this off the top of my head to get a point across.), the Romans, the Greek, the Chinese, English and the Americas, in no particular order. All these empires had one thing in common, they all ruled the world in one way or another, and they ruled it with an iron fist. The leaders of these empires were afraid not only of their enemies but also from their own citizens, using every excuse from not believing in god to , (ewww) terrorism.
So, why should now be any different? When the powers that be come into power they can delegate as they see fit. Of course, most of the time they see fit to go to war. Look back at the history of America. It began from war and continued in war ever since. Revolution, civil, Spanish/American, 1812, WWI, WWII, Korea, SE Asia, Presian Gulf on and on. It is almost as if you can't be a nation unless you can destroy another. Sickening, I know.
My Point? It isn't ever going to get any better. The Clinton years were it. I don't believe there will ever be peace between America and the rest of the world, if America is at war, then the powers that be can do whatever they want, as we have experienced the last couple of years.
It is a tough pill to swallow, but until I can come up with a plan to reverse what carnage has been done by this admistration, I am just coping with the status quo. Also, every nation mentioned above and every nation that has ever ruled the world, America excepted, has collapsed, not from a foriegn enemy, but from within its own borders.
