That was a really insightful post, Kate. I totally understand where you are coming from. There are many in my extended family and one cousin in particular who says the most underhanded and mean-spirited ethnic and gender asides I have ever heard. It puts me in the awkward position of trying to get along with them but letting them know I don't appreciate such blatant racism and snobbery.
But at the end of it all you just have to do what you think is right even if it ruffles a few feathers.

for future reference, you can go to www.westernunion.com and charge your credit card and have it sent to wherever you want it to go. That's what I did when I had to send a deposit for my school in Yemen.
I'm surprised he didn't bitch more about the service charge than the "gooks."

If you still have your US ATM card and it has a PLUS or CIRRUS logo, you can withdraw cash from any ATM displaying those decals, while you wait for the Western Union cavalry to arrive.

My mother is the same way. I just ahake my head. She did use the same *gook* line and I told her that if she was going to be ingnorant and racist to at least use the right terminology.

Hi Kate. My parents are the same way and they don't appreciate diversity in society. It sometimes make me feel ashamed that they are my parents and I gave up trying to change their attitudes.
By the way, thank you for visiting my blog. Aloha.

It's a derogatory term for an Asian person.

Hi Kate! I'm sorry to hear about all the trouble you've been having. How frustrating!
I haven't heard the term "gook" in a very long time...my parents say "orientals" in a very slow manner, so as to let everyone know they are being PC. 'Course, they're from whitesville, USA.
