Yeah, movers suck. I remember when I started with my current company back in '95. They picked up the tab to move us from Kansas up to Alberta and supplied the movers. I think it was Allied Van Lines (we were quite the departing celebrities in our little town in Kansas when the moving van showed up with Executive Moving Division on the side. I hope no one saw that our stuff barely filled a third of that trailer...); we had them store it for a month, so they took the trailer to their yard (in Cleveland or Cincinnati...one of those). When we found a place we called them to bring the stuff. The driver must have had some "stuff" in his background as he was denied entry to Canada on his first attempt. His back up plan was to go away, wait 'til shift change and try again when "that bitch" wasn't there. Amazingly enough, he made it through the second time. (Of course, this was all way before 9/11 and the new sphincter tight security at the border.)
So, the driver's an older guy and he picks up this helper locally: a 60 something skinny old dude. I'm sure now that he was a homeless person. You could see on the seat of his pants where he had messed himself at some point. (He wasn't going to be sitting on any of our chairs.)
So, I stayed home to "help out". I brought the boys some coffee. Then, when I watched them start to work, I feared for our stuff. Then I feared that one or both would have a heart attack. I wound up pretty much taking care of unloading myself - at least the heavy stuff.
Hired movers? All I can say is "harumph!".
