If the economically disadvantaged were better educated, there'd be no one to fight the wars for the elites. The system works for those at the top, so they're not to going to fix it because they don't see it as broken.

Rob - I live in West Central Illinois. Why?
Lew - Excellent point! If the public gets too smart, they won't be so willing to fall for the BS.

Glad my diary provoked you to write this. Nice bit of research.
You might be interested to know that one of the issues with which I have recently been tasked to address at yearlykos is the issue of equity. What role can schools play in addressing the ongoing inequity in which are students live?

Welcome teacherken. Thanks for the nice words.
For the last ten years I've worked in a high poverty district. During that time I've had the opportunity to see firsthand what poverty does to a child's educational experience. It can mean the difference between passing and failing for a lot of them. If you're not familiar with Ruby Payne, she does some great work dealing with poverty. Definitely someone to check out.

I find the "pull yourself up" rhetoric hysterical when it's coming from a silver-spooner who has had everything he ever got in his life handed to him-including the Presidency.
In a truly Social Darwinist world, Chimpy would last about 10 minutes, if that long.

I agree JR. It's always easier to talk about those boot straps when you've never had to live it. I'm sure that as a kid old Georgieboy had someone to pull up his bootstraps for him.

Fantastic post, kissfan, and so true. This grotesque disparity between the haves and have-nots is destroying our society on so many levels, but people don't always connect the dots in that way.
And thanks for doing what you do. You and Mrs. kissfan are heroes to me.
