Hello Jen,
What a pretty and sophisticated colour choice for the hat!
Once it is washed and blocked, the underlayer will show more - at least that's what happened to mine. The yarn does soften with washing - it's been one of my favourite yarns since I got my hands on it for the first time.
I am glad you like the pattern - I had fun making it up.
