David,
So very interesting, even for those of us who have lived our whole lives here. I have never made it up that way, but have always been curious.
I have a friend who was just transfered there to work air traffic control in Bethel. He says it is quite a trip living there. So very different than he ever imagined. I am glad to get to see that thru your eyes.
Oh and i wanted to let you know that my last comment linked to the wrong blog. I wanted it to link to http://hereforme.blogspot.com
Can't wait to read the interview.

I love doing it; makes me feel connected. First quarter is over and we're in the midst of another round of parent conferences. There's been less and less daylight lately and I've been having a hard time getting adjusted. I'm ordering some "full spectrum" lights that should help. Phyllis- it's awesome that you think that. Maybe I'll turn it into one David | Email | Homepage | 10.28.04 - 11:28 pm | #

I'm really enjoying this as well. Is the teaching more or less the same as city teaching? How is classroom control? Does Alaska have state standards?
Keep sending pics. Love 'em! Pat York | Email | Homepage | 10.29.04 - 7:45 am | #

David,
It is hard to believe that it is already getting dark up there. Here is just about normal for the rest of the united states. Gets dark at about 5:30, but as we both know it will only get worse.
The full spectrum lights will do wonders. Even if you just get one of those alarm clocks that has the light on it and gets brighter as it gets closer to your alarm time. Acting almost like a sunrise. Those are not as expensive as the larger lights are.
There is also an herbal pill you can take called COq10. You can find it at any drug store here. It helps with the lack of energy problem and will really do wonders combined with the lights. Please let me know if i can send you anything. I have left my e-mail address. I can only imagine what it is like to live up there. Don't worry about the cost issue. The COq10 isn't that expensive and i would like to help if i can. Anything to make life up there a little easier. Shawna | Email | Homepage | 10.29.04 - 9:12 am | #

great blog david. the post about burning garbage totally reminded me of when i was younger going to my grandma's in brooklyn (in the '80's). there was a large garbage incinerator nearby and they also incinerated garbage in her building, it actually didnt smell bad. maybe its just one of those smells you get used to and then enjoy- like fish or skunk.
how busy is alaskas 3rd busiest airport?
