Definatley a prime example of the goverments lack of understanding of conditions outside the realm of the lower forty-eight. But has it not been the long standing issue of not "dealing" with those communities that are primarily non-white? Just a thought anyways.

While I understand the point being made by Tahirih, this problem is certainly not unique to Alaska. Indian reservations have been dealing with these same issues for as long as they have existed. While the national poverty rate is 11.6%, the poverty rate for residents of reservations is a whopping 31.2%. The national unemployment rate is 5.4%...the average on reservations is 51.5%. With the arrival of Indian casinos there are more jobs available to Tribal members, however I would submit that in most cases the social problems created by the casinos outweighs the benefit.

Additionally, the gaming machines/equipment in most Indian casinos are rented from corporations at a huge cost, which puts a great deal of the profits from the casinos into corporate hands, rather than the Tribe's (which is probably the only reason Indian gaming is allowed to continue). I believe that anyone who is willing to take a look would agree that there is a problem, unfortunately solutions are not a priority for the US government, and most Americans in general...wasn't that the point of reservations? Out of sight...out of mind.

So true... I think most of these statistics are shared by our inner cities too. With so many differences, the things that stay consistent between the urban and rural contexts are interesting if not frightening, to say the least.

So how did you like living in Tunt for a while? Hope you come back and visit us here in Tunt. Tunt life is really good. Henry is pretty good too himself. And Tunt is good, but its getting cold everyday....
