To Philly, From Alaska, w/comments

Okay, I gotta admit, that sounds REALLY awful. But since you are still alive to tell about it... ;-)

I'm going to have to agree with yetzirah...it sounds awful! A fish popsicle, huh? Good for you for trying it and for living to tell the tale!

I realize there is probably no way I could possibly convince anyone of this, but it's really not bad. I think you would have to try it to understand...

What's the reason for fermenting it? Does it make it more pleasant to eat than 'ordinary' raw fish?

I am trying hard not to equate 'fermented' with 'rotted' :-).

However - I suppose we eat cheese without thinking about it - which is essentially milk that has gone off. And I am fermenting five gallons of apple-juice at this moment in a bucket downstairs to make some wine.

I just found your blog today via Photo Fridays - I hope you don't mind a lurker!

I love your photos - I've always wanted to visit Alaska, and someday we will. For now, I will have to live that dream through your blog. We are in Hawaii and, as much as we love it here, are totally fascinated by cold, snow, and ice.

I've heard there's a similar delicacy in Sweden called "rotted fish." Does fermented fish have much taste, or is it too cold to taste like anything?

I'm an adventurous eater, but I'm not exactly longing to try it, I confess . . . .

Yikes! I just tried Miso soup and couldn't handle it. I don't think I could handle "fermented fish". You're much braver than me my friend :)

Wow.
I suppose that it is no worse than eating Haggis, although that it cooked. I suppose each culture has their own food that another culture may find revolting.
Now, I have to head over to Safeway and pick up some haggis, pickled pigs feet, and head cheese. Company is coming over.

Bravo to you for trying it!!

And...

I think I'll have to take your word on it being good... fermented fish is not high on my list.

Sounds good to me. Send some my way. I'll try anything...once...well, maybe twice.

hey man,
Marco, giving you the transatlantique nod. raw fish, rotten fish, fermented fish, cured fish, pickled fish. its all the same, all good. Dave i miss you much. keep on eating wierd shit and suckin the marrow out of life.
-M
-hasnt anybody ever sucked marrow? shit's good.

Eek, that looks and sounds gross. But I am all about expanding my food horizons, so I would definitely try it once, and if it was yummy I'd eat it again. But you have to admit, the photo is pretty gnarly.

Ally- I think fermentng just gives it more flavor. Raw fish might be a bit bland.
Haole Barb- That's funny, I've always wanted to visit Hawaii. My parents and sister lived there before I came around... I have a cousen at the U. of Hawaii.
Beth- Yeah, I've heard of that... it's being frozen keeps it from stinking too much, but some people perfer it a bit thawed out.
Yamel- What's weird about Miso soup?
StinkWinkerton- Who ARE you?
Janine- Not even just a little?
J.- I'm enjoying your books. Keep 'em commin'.
Marco- Rome treating you ok? What's the temperature like these days over there? How was your visit with Imani and Jambi? I HAVE sucked marrow... but I perfer fermented fish.
Elise- Eek is the name of the next village over from Tuntutuliak.

This delicacy is one of the finest in the world! I've tried sushi, sashimi, and the like, nothing comes close to the goodness of this food. I am partial in my thought process--I am from Tunt!
