You make an excellent point, compassion is not found in institutions, but in individuals. And it can only be achieved throught sincerity, I seriously doubt that many of the rich & famous are truly sincere.

I think these celebs who are mouthing off on subjects they have no expertise in are either

1- Expressing their views or hopes even if they are misguided.

2- Just arrogant. Thinking they know better

or
3- Looking to get their name in the press.

They got lots of attention because they are celebs and we bloggers give them more. They aren't experts, but are we? No one but a few hopeless souls are going to pay attention to this non-college educated pundit in Florida. I will never make it on Larry King.
