Most of media-- and America for that matter --can pooh-pooh the notion that Biblical Prophesy might contain even a shred of credibility. But what most don't realize is, "everything happens for a reason." I don't say this as a religious person, though I most certainly am, I say this through 45 years of observation. It could, and often is, argued that this is merely the natural phenomenon of events following a natural course respective of the events that preceded them. And that's a fair observation. But I'm left with one very big question...
In Immanuel Velikovsky's "Worlds in Collision", if an event like, say, Joshua asking God to 'let the sun and moon stand still in the sky till the Israelites were revenged upon their enemies,' actually occured, then there must be a record on the other side of the globe where the sun did not rise as expected...
Assuming:
a) Joshua actually said what the bible claims he said prior to the event.
b) Texts and oral tradition from the other side of the globe concur with the Sun and Moon event, albeit in reverse.
Then that should be enough that the so-called enlightened should have no problem with some measure of bible prophesy.
My father gave me "Worlds in Collision" years ago, hoping to dissuade me from my beliefs, but! I couldn't help but ask, "how did Joshua know to ask at that very moment for the Sun and Moon to stand still in the sky? Is it not reasonable to expect that some "Higher Power", or God, set everything in motion in the beginning, in just such a way that Joshua's 'miracle' would be ready when he needed it.
To my point; The events surrounding Israel, and specifically Sharon: there are specific events waiting in the wings that everyone should be worried about. One very specific prophesy is the complete and utter destruction in pillars of smoke and fire (nuclear in nature?) of Damascus. Could this be an extension of a possible salvo/skirmish/all out war with Iran. We know from prophesy that Israel will not be wiped off the map. Ever. But no one else is safe. Especially the United States.
The world is spiralling. I don't mean to be pessimistic, but the world is not as safe as it once was... not as sane as it once was... if it ever was.
I think it's inevitable that Iran will become the next front in the War on Terror. And it's not going to be pretty, especially with our nation suffering from Weak-kneed Democrat Syndrome.

Dear Kobayashi:
One tiny error you may wish to correct:
"actual withdrawal from the West Bank" in about the 4th paragraph should be changed to "actual withdrawal from Gaza"
Otherwise, great blog!

Ahem.
Sharon is incapacitated. Not the IDF. Or the IAF. Or the multitude of officers and strategists and politicians who run Israel.
If I were you, I'd pay more attention to the actual Israelis who write for the Israeli papers, instead of David Horowitz.
FDR died before the end of WWII, and America didn't fall into ruin. Something to ponder, there.

I think you mean April Glaspie (US Ambassador to Iraq in 1990), not Gillespie

You assume that April Glaspie's gaffe was unintentional. Some debate there.
You also forget that Ronald Reagan sold missiles to the Iranians, instead of punishing them. No debate on that.
Otherwise, you're correct that the wolves will be actively assessing their options at this moment of transition.
Velikovsky was a charlatan who inspired the Nazi's apocalyptic cosmology. However, if ELAshley is as eager for a Revelations-style meltdown as he seems, any attack on Iran -- either US or Israeli -- should produce the desired result.
I'm hoping none of our leaders are that suicidal. But, as Arthur Koestler pointed out, the human brain is a very bad design...likley to lead to an evolutionary dead-end.

Though I agree with the crux of this entry, I take exception to the characterization that Amb. Gillespie's oft-quoted "no position" comment was mealy-mouthed. It was clear to my satisfaction that the comment was in the context of peaceful resolution under the auspices of the impending Arab League negotiations. Tariq Aziz himself drew the same conclusion and took with him no ambiguity in regards to the US stance.

Now, tell me: where's that Daniel Dennett post of yours that I saw on Technorati? I don't see it here, when I actually click through the link.

Another tiny error you might wish to correct. David HoroVitz, editor of the Jerusalem Post. Not the same as David HoroWitz, editor of Front Page Magazine.

Um. The columnist from the Jerusalem Post that you quoted was David Horovitz, an Israeli journalist--not David Horowitz, the American ex-lefty-turned-righty.
My mistake for not following the link.
However, my point still stands: The IDF, IAF, intellligence services, and Israeli police are all still there, intact, working under the exact same commanders they worked under before Sharon got sick. The only change is in the Prime Minister's office--admittedly large, but the end of Israel is most certainly not at hand.
Israel has lost Prime Ministers suddenly before. Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated. She has survived, and she will survive.

It all goes back to that whole "Axis of Evil" thing, doesn't it?
North Korea
Iraq (since taken care of)
IRAN
We can take some satisfaction in the fact that George W. Bush has been on top of the situation in Iran since after 9/11, even though he knew that liberals would label him an idiot and a moron because of his "axis of evil" declaration. But I think he was right on target.
On a slightly different note, it is worth looking at some of the prophecies sacred to the Shiite Muslims who are awaiting the return of the 12th Imam. Iran's President Ahmadinejad is a member of this group.
Here's a good list of those prophecies: http://www.14sayings.8m.com/m14.htm
Read it over, and you will understand how someone who WANTS those things to happen can look at the list of prophecies and easily believe that they are being fulfilled right before their very eyes.
Kobayashi, you are absolutely correct in your assessment of the danger posed by the fanatics in Iran, and in your belief that instability in Israel may convince the Iranians to attack. Let us pray that this never happens.

"FDR died before the end of WWII, and America didn't fall into ruin. Something to ponder, there."
FDR had the support of the international media. They even helped him spread blatantly pro-American propaganda, even participated in military action against Hitler by running "leaked" pictures of fake airbases. The Invasion of Normandy was a huge success, thanks in no small part to a press willing to spread misinformation in support of the Allies.
Now, the media has declared war on the US and Israel. The only propaganda and misinformation they knowingly spread is that which supports the mullahs and condemns the US and Israel.
Israel will survive Sharon's death, but will it survive the Islamic D-Day the media is helping its enemies plan?

Nice post.
But regarding: "No wonder there's a robust right wing in Israel. From this vantage point, I'm surprised there's any opposition to it. Never underestimate the loony left, even their Israeli brethren who live daily with the threat of personal and national annihilation"... The left in Israel is nothing like the left elsewhere. The Israeli left is full of combat soldiers who appreciate freedom and self defense - although they may be misguided about socialism.
