Napier's idea was good in theory, but not in practice. The crackdown on suttee and other religious tensions led to the Indian Revolt of 1857, also known as the Sepoy Mutiny.
I do appreciate that you say "liberal fringe," because as you are aware not every liberal wants to destroy our cultural foundations. Of course what makes up our foundations are somewhat debatable. After all, the Founding Fathers weren't always in complete agreement on that either.
Doug - It sounds like you're arguing against the abolishment of suttee, but I doubt that's the case and don't want to put words in your mouth. Instead, I suspect that you're wishing that it had transpired absent any conflict. That would have been nice. America with nobody having been killed in the Revolutionary War would have been nice too as would the fall of the Taliban and Saddam holding an election without U.S. action.
