Save the polar bear! Starve the Nunavut!
The indigenous peoples of Canada will be pretty ticked-off if they can't hunt polar bear. From an article from the CBC
Hunters in Nunavut are celebrating an increase in the polar bear quota for 2005, prompted by reports that the animals are prowling the streets of some Arctic communities.
The territory's government has approved a 28-per-cent increase in the polar bear quota for this year.
That will let Inuit hunters shoot 115 more bears, for a total of 518. Some will be harvested for their meat and pelts, and others will be killed in sport hunts.
James Qillaq, the president of the Hunters and Trappers Organization in Clyde River, a community on the east coast of Baffin Island, said families have grown worried about the safety of their children as the bears become more aggressive.
And later in the same article...
Polar bears shot in such hunts, usually by free-spending American hunters, can bring in between $20,000 and $35,000 apiece in terms of economic spinoffs [sic].
Well, I guess it's alright if some Nunavut children get eaten, they're obviously all blood-lusting capitalists despoiling the environment that nature loving people everywhere want to enjoy via the Nature Channel.
OK, I'm done with the snark for now...

Snark away, JB!
You highlight another interesting angle in line with Mark Steyn's grand thesis:
An unconfident, culture-of-death society will always see it as a net negative when the human species seeks to expand its 'habitat'. More kids ought to yield fewer polar bears (within reason) because humans are at the top of the food chain--as God intended.
Instead, the wacko fringe of the enviro-left is seeking to deprive people of the livelihood needed to support their families (or to have larger ones).

Why do folks fall for the thing that's trying to kill them?
Because the power to kill is a great power indeed, and those who don't see a Higher Power will lust after the highest power they can see?
