The word "embrace" is also an often used Islamic term for becoming a believer. As in "embrace Islam".

To the architectPaul and Milena Murdoch/Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects designer who put this together, I offer you a hearty "go fuvk yourself."
If we just stand by and let it happen, then we deserve what we get. Having a big red crescent as a memorial for the Flight 93 victims is akin to having a swastika at a Holocaust memorial: But Tom Sokolowski, the director of the Andy Warhol Museum, and one of the Stage II jury members, said that claim is "asinine." I've got news for Tom Sokolawski and Paul Murdock, the Muslime terrorist world wide are going to laugh their azzes off over your PC hug a koranic terrorist bullshi1.

Slightly off-topic, but relevant considering the date:
We share your concern regarding the lack of 'appropriate' 9/11 memorials. We've put our own 5 minute video memorial online. No burning buildings, no rubble, no explosions, no speeches, no screeches, no Bin Laden, no bodies. Just a remembrance of some people whose lives were cut short through no fault of their own, with poignant candid snapshots from their lives, and music.

Thanks for this particular article. Having been used to a lot of free time on my hand and that changed after enrolling in MA program so I turn to your site whenever I can.

I find it hard to believe how so many conservative Americans are so quick to attack this design for the memorial.
Many Americans have a similar symbol around their neck or in their home. It's the cross. The cross that Jesus died on. Before Jesus died the cross spoke to nothing else than the brutality of the Roman empire. Yet today, the cross is a symbol for the grace and sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
What could designing a memorial in the shape of the Crescent mean? It is a direct attack at the people who perpetrated those attacks on 9/11, one that attacks the very core of their beliefs. They attacked believing that they were doing the will of Allah and acting in the name is Islam.
It shows that these people were wrong and that what they were doing was not Islam. This memorial seeks to redefine Islam and religion as the hijackers saw it in the Christian light. It redefines their symbolism of hate and brutality as one of sacrifice and forgiveness.
This is the most powerful form of defiance and it is deeper than any conservative blogger so far has cared to notice.

The red (autumn season) crescent symbol speaks nothing else than the brutality and senselessness of the terrorists' minds. At least they could have come up something better than the "Crescent of Embrace." A simple but large granite stone block at the site of impact with the 40 names etched into the stone would be just as poignant and defiant.
The real form of defiance would be the rebuilding of the Twin Towers or something similar.

You are forgetting the maple trees. Maple = Canada. Maple Crescent = Canadian Royal Navy. It's a not-so-subtle endorsement of the Canadian Navy! Bastards!

I don't see it that way since Maple trees are not indigneous to only Canada. Canadian government selected the maple tree as Canada's arboreal emblem. So, no deal with that. Rather, I'm looking at crescent symbol that matches perfectly with the Crescent muslim flags, the color red (autumn), and the "Crescent of Embrace" memorial title.

It also matches perfectly with the Red "C" of the Christian Coalition logo. It also matches perfectly the crescent on the South Carolina flag. It also matches perfectly the alchemic symbol for silver.
The red also matches perfectly the red in the United States Flag. The red crescent is actually the Islamic counterpart of the Red Cross, a neutral medical organization.
BTW, the traditional color of Islam: Green.

The Crescent Red Cross is anything but neutral.
As for the S.C. flag, you have a point but it's blue but it's not a memorial flag.
http://www.50states.com/flag/scflag.htm
And for the Christian Coalition's logo, not so. The blocky letter "C" in red. http://www.cc.org/ hardly makes a match.
Hence, the reason I had the gif animated graphic of the Memorial design and the Syrian crescent flag design. You can't do that with the S.C. flag nor the "C" in the Christian Coaltion logo, either.
It's the combination of red (in the autumn season), the shape (crescent) and the label "Crescent of Embrace."
And lastly, we don't need to be reminded about a "crescent" knowing where terrorists come from.

Ghastly. Now when we have a crescent moon I'm gonna be royally ticked off!

It also has a tower that can be interpreted as a minaret.
Scrap this plan.

The Crescent Red Cross is anything but neutral.
The Red Crescent
The Red Crescent Organization is part of the Red Cross.
They aspire to neutrality. Do you have some specific complaint against them?

Here's the symbol of al Qaeda.
To wit:
A gray globe is set against a black background. An open Koran, facing up, is superimposed on the globe; a rifle, fist (with index finger extended) and black flag rise from the book. Yellow lettering at bottom says "Monotheism and Jihad."

Here's my perspective:
Al-Qaeda (red crescent) plowed the plane full of fighting civilians. Now, this one, did the Red Cross/Red Crescent save the plane full of civilians?
Which one makes the most sense?
