The announcement of the
next president was orignally set for the summer, and I learned that the
campus wanted to find out the announcement before school ended for the year and they chose this week as the announcement? That's where
I found it interesting. So next time you quote me, ask me first! dont make assumptions of what i mean or think. I was quite aware of the earlier events. The BoT actually had more than 8 months, but the acamedic community demanded to know the announcement before the year is out. So the announcement just happened to be on the final week when the students and faculty have the least potential to react to the news? Tell me that.

No assumption was made, Scandia. Your words "The board is kinda clever and sneaky to stage this on the last week of school where the students and the faculty have to deal with finals. This shows me that the Board has blatant disrespect for the academic community by using "lowball" moves."

In other words, you're saying (believing) that the BoT planned this announcement to purposely land on the last week of school in order to "get away with it." Which is why I included a link to your commentaries. I've made no assumption on what you thought. You've made it plain and clear thinking that this was all nefariously planned to fall on the last week of school.

Balderdash.

And, no. It was not longer than 8 months. IKJ *OFFICIALLY* announced his letter of resignation on Sept 1, 2005 (the same day he announced his plans to retire) that he will step down December 31, 2006, giving enough time for a presidential search committee be put together. The selection process cannot move ahead or be planned until an offical notice of resignation by IKJ is received by Gallaudet University and be made public. Count the months from the time IKJ officially resigned to the BoT putting together a search committee to announcing JKF.

The BoT began in October 2005 and selected 6 Board members and 11 others to be a part of the presidential search committee. The committee officially convened in November.

Essentially this whole process really took less than 8 month if you want to start when the Presidential Search Committee was fully put together.

If you need help with the timeline, go here: http://pr.gallaudet.edu/presiden...sidentalsearch/

Ok, I thank you for the timeline, but it does not answer my question about choosing this particular week as the time to make the announcement. I feel that this particular process is a rush job. At other universities, this process is a year or longer. Why does it have to be 8 months? The current president doesnt have to leave til the end of the actual year, not the school year. Something is fishy here. If you dont agree, then it is a case where we have to agree to disagree.

If you think this was a rush job then consider DPN 1988 when Dr. Jerry C. Lee (Gally's 7th president) submitted his resignation letter on August 24, 1987 to step down at the end of December 1987. No sooner did the BoT selected the 8th president (Zinser) on March 6, 1988 some 6 1/2 months later.

You can have your conspiracy theory. I have seen no proof that this was a rush job since this whole process included the students and staff participation and the BoT weighed all considerations and sides but ultimately it was the BoT's decision to select the next president....not the students.

Had it been one of the other two "D"eaf finalists that was selected for president, would people be calling that a rush job?

Not likely.

And, your statement is incorrect that most university presidential searches take a year or longer. It is in the university's interest to complete the search process in a timely manner and as quick as possible because having a ship without a captain for over a year is not a good thing.

"Dr. Bowen reported that Mr. Bill Bowen (from the search firm) spoke about the time line for the search. He has conducted about 200 university president searches. It will probably take about a month to get the job description together, two months for outreach, a couple of months for screening and selection, and a month to come to closure. That adds up to six months which is the average time required to find a university President. Once an agreement is made with the person, there will be approximately a three-month period before the person comes here to report for duty."

Hardly a rush job considering what has been done to include students and staff. Any claims that this is a rush job will be summarily brushed aside.

Find another conspiracy theory.

I don't care if president should be deaf or not. I rather to have the better president who can operation bettter at the campus to increase more succesful students. I think that King Jordan sucks when he become president. Notice that students succesful have been grow decrease from middle 80s? Before middle 80s, there were highly succesful graduation. What happen? Before "deaf" president, there were better than Jordan.

Once again, I don't care if Jane is orally or not. Her job is to make sure students finish their goal! Make excellent fund for Gally of need or whatever thing I don't know.

Quite the contrary. There have been MORE successful deaf people after graduation, with more of them continuing on to graduate schools to get their master's and PhD degrees or get good careers.

Please, take the time to do an actual research regarding successful post-graduation results. Check out Gallaudet University Alumni Survey 1999 (I have it right now in front of me). Contact Kurt Schneidmiller at Gallaudet if you want the 69-page free survey results.

As for Jane not helping in bringing in the dough, what makes you so sure of that?

And exactly what are the students' jobs to finish their goals? Party or study?

Hello, this is David O. Reynolds, a Gallaudet graduate. I am a third generation deaf and my boys are the fourth, went to Illinois Deaf and Indiana Deaf respectively. Anyway, we are strong supporters of the protest, Jane Fernandes cannot and must not be the President. We need a strong culturally deaf President as a leader and role model for the whole world. It is time for a change. Please hang in there and fight, do not give up!!!! Students still have the power and believe it. More and more of us will rally and support you all. Please check out www.clubdeaf.com then see cdtv then see TVDEAF.COM look for our daily NEWS in ASL See the National and Deaf Community News and our Commentaries about Gallaudet. I believe this will empower and inspire our people to realize, to reconfirm, to know the reasons why we need RDPN, Culturally Deaf President NOW. Thanks, Hang in There!!!!

So, David, the issue has all along been about getting a culturally deaf president but nothing about qualification? Yet, many protesters are denying this. Look at IKJ for the past 18 years have helped Gallaudet grow in terms of technology, education, and providing the necessary exposure about deaf culture (e.g., tv interviews, newspaper interviews, magazines, etc..). This would be in no different situation with JKF when she can do the same thing and improve upon even better than IKJ's achievements.

So, in retrospect, you have automatically made up your mind on choosing one of the two Deaf finalists but not JKF. This shows your bias, prejudice and discriminatory practices all in the name of Deaf culture only.

Where is the Board of Trustees? Why are they letting Dr Fernandez hang out to dry like this? Have they made a comment of support to the public about their new appointee that I missed? I knew Dr Fernandez years ago when she and I were both students at the University of Iowa. She taught me, my sisters and a group of family friends ASL as our mother was losing the remainder of her hearing. I remember her as a warm, funny, intelligent woman who was a natural teacher. I am so proud to have known her way back when and proud of her achievements.
