Put a VP in the pizza shop and I could do it easily.
Your poll is very narrow and limited. No room for creativity, or accommodations!

Your question poll is interesting subject. If by phone, impossible for me to answer but I can take the orders from the customers who ordered thru the websites. For example, you can order the pizza thru Pizza Hut'w website. I tested it and turned out great!

Larry, it's about whether a profoundly or severely deaf person can answer the phone. Not about using the video phone. Clearly an off topic issue.

I made it explicitly clear. The subject is about a person's auditory use and whether he has the necessary word discrimination ability to handle the job while using a hearing aid.

Dennis, certainly. But that is not the topic here. It's about whether you can take orders by using the phone auditory-wise.

It probably helps that the subject matter is very narrow; you have only the menu to work with, in all its variations. I would think it is possible for one who is moderately to severely deaf to manage this. Impressive, nonetheless. You are probably one of those born with an aural preference for learning (more people, hearing or not, are visual learners than aural or kinesthetic learners).

As for me, ha, as a severely-to-profoundly deaf person, I won't stand a chance. Loathe hearing noises on any kind of regular basis too.

It's not just the menu. You have to field questions from callers that are sometimes not even food related. Other times it's about food, or coupon deals, even one time I was asked if we have octopus for toppings and the guy was clearly of Asian accent.

Mike, I think this is a ridiculous poll. Whats your point? To show that you can "really" talk on the phone, and that others can't?? Seems that's what you're trying to say...

Suppose you ask "visually impaired" people to conduct a poll on how many colors they can see... What's the point? Some people are totally blind, and can't see ANYTHING. Some have central vision or blurred vision, and can identify colors, shapes, etc. Its completely individual, and has nothing to do with whether a person has value or not.

Whats wrong with saying, "I'm DEAF as a rock, and proud of it!" Nothing is wrong with that..

But something IS wrong with saying,"I can hear voices on the phone so I can take pizza orders at Dominos, and YOU CAN'T"...

See what I'm saying?

Just as I suspected. There bound to be a few jealous deaf people out there.

What's wrong with saying that you can hear over the phone? Or that you can hear and understand words? Or the music? The songs? The birds chirping? Or any of that?

I'm just outlining the things on what many deaf and hoh people can do out there. And that includes taking orders over the phone.

And, hey, frankly I'm proud (and fortunate) that I am able to do that every single day.

Let's not get overly sensitive here.

Albeit My speech awareness with biaural hearing aids, all people's
voices sound Greek to me. The only
sounds I understand are musical
notes for my violin and cello!

Jean -- over 95 dB loss

Jean, don't ever give up playing your violin and cello!

My Gawd.. are you for real, Mac? What planet did you come from anyway? I think your manner of trying to obtain attention in any form or shape, is pathetic - not to mention your combative approach to the deaf community at large. I know you will refute this with an 'off topic' reply and that's fine.

Let me ask you this: It's easy to do what you're doing within the blogsphere - but would you have the nerve to do the same thing in person among the deaf community?

Incidently, there are a large number who can enjoy music and are able to carry on a conversation with their voices. It's a matter of choice and where their comfort zones falls. I expect others to respect my preferences.

RFW

Yes (to your question). Did you not see me at the blog/vlog conference at Gallaudet? I choose to speak which is my preference instead of signing. A matter of choice. And I will still say the same thing in person, and have done so.

You see it as "combative" only because you disagree with what I have to say. Clearly not the case but your imagination when it comes to "combativeness." I choose how I present my subjects. Asking people if they can use the phone (both ways, speaking and listening) is a matter of curiosity for many people. Some deaf people may see this as a problem thinking I'm superior than them. Not so. Just so happens I have those abilities. As so others do.

As for deaf people enjoying music, I know. Why do you think I encouraged Jean "Over 95" to continue with her violin and cello practice? Lest you forget I am a ragtime pianist my self and have been playing the piano the age of 7 years old.

AGB would have loved you! He would have kissed you and used you as his poster child.

Good thing I didn't go to AGB, then.

Combative? I see it as 'combative'? Sorry.. that won't wash - not when you have this header at the very beginning of your comments section:

"Dare to comment?"

...and yes, I saw you in the video for the conference that took place at Gallaudet university. No comment on that.

Naturally.. the idea of using a phone in the manner you suggested is a question many have. However, it's the manner in which you put this forth that comes across as .. shall we say, offensive?

Let's face it.. you're offensive, no matter how you slice it.

let me ask.. do you honestly think most people will take the time and trouble to read all of your entries (entire chapters and verses, plus side notes)? I sure don't.

It's truly admirable how someone can spend as much time and research on any given subject as you have. I know I didn't expend this amount during my university years. Come to think of it.. neither did some of my friends who worked on their dissertations before earning their PhD degrees.

I salute you and wish you well in your future (and pathetic) endeavors.

RFW, that's YOUR perspective. One of the few out there who gets their sensibilities easily offended because I challenge their thinkings. For any matter, seems like some Deaf people get offended easily on any deaf-related subjects contrary to their thinking. I'm not a Lemming. I don't follow people to the edge of a cliff without asking first what's going on. You do whatever you want.

It's offensive only because there are those who can use the phone, and there are those who cannot. I am not afraid to ask these kinds of questions. Which makes my blog rather unique. People are naturally curious to see just how well deaf people can use the phone, and so I ask these questions differently under a different kind of litmus test (ie pizza store test). If you look at the results, there are a few people who believe they can use the phone easily or with some difficulty in that scenario. It gives us some insight.

I don't really care how many people read my blog entries even though I average between 500 and 600 hits a day. Not bad considering I write other non-deaf related entries. I write because I enjoy writing whatever is on my mind. I know that there are people out there who do read my blog entries. Of course, most people don't even read blogs. Of those who do, read only specific or preferred blogs. And of those who do read blogs look for interesting subjects to read and not every entries.

You are one of the few people who actually take the time to complain (more like whine), while others see and understand exactly where I'm coming from and why I write these blog entries. And are normally agreeable and supportive of what I write here.

It's not about the amount of time researching. But knowing where to research. I'm knowledgeable in a lot of subject areas. That's who I am.

RFW, I don't need your salute because you don't mean it in the first place. And secondly, stop being such a wuss.

My hearing loss ranges from mild in the low frequencies to profound in the high.

I'm a Librarian, and must use the phone on a daily basis. Of course, I must ask for repeats, but sometimes I have no choice but to hand the phone over to a normal hearing person.

I'm also a musician - see my blog:

Love your blog!
