Interesting! Yes, it is well educated for us and them. But remember they who closed the deaf schools, pushing deaf teachers out, advocated on oral program than ASL, etc by the State. We need to get back on ASL so that we can learned to write better. We are suing the hospital who refused to provided an interpreter. They are powerful with lot of money which we don't have. It is not easy to get back on ADA law cuz they twisted around the ADA law. We are weak but I am finding a way to fight back. That what happpen to deaf schools,etc. Not easy. Back to the point yes subtitles are very important for everyone to read and understand the deaf's from the outsiders.
Let me add one more, I joined Espn board message to discuss about football players, etc. They do seldom make fun of my writing/spelling. I seldom told them that I am deaf and excuse my lousy languange. Sometime misread what they are saying as well. They still make fun of me and that hurt. Bad experience!
Mike, great way of illustrating your point. You've started a new debate using the deaf-blind as an example of a group who would benefit from captions. It amazes me that people wouldn't want to be inclusive to members of the general deaf community.

It's amazing about the unique language.
It's arduous and complex language....Asian and Arabic languages are truly the most unique and perceptible.
I'd envy these people to translate and know these languages.

True! When I watch foreign films, I always appreciate for the subtitles and I get an insight into their cultures, even through the English subtitles.

Yup, and even by providing a transcript our International readers could run them transcript thru a translation software like I do for Spanish blogs on DR (I know a little Spanish..not enough to approve blogs without the translator).
She is a hearing gal. Her signing is very bad...You use her as an example which its very bad example, you should find real Deaf Japanese instead a hearing gal who couldnt sign.

fluency and content are 2 different things. Politicians are often fluent but not brilliant. That, is what's keeping you and your small band of deaf people in the closet.
"Mike, Mike," please note that I was making a very, very salient point about subtitles and sign language using the JSL approach. Whether the person is fluent or not the point is you still wouldn't understand what a fluent signer would be saying. NADA! What it would require is an English subtitle, for example, to understand what the signer was saying. This isn't about fluency here but the information that's being relayed and be understood by all.

Abbie-- More people understand English worldwide than just about any language. Anything you caption in English will be understood by a LOT of people. Mike made several good points here.
